After 11 Years, The Frag Dolls Are Done

Say goodbye to the Frag Dolls.

As revealed in a post at the group's website, Ubisoft has retired the all-female professional gamer team, ending their 11-year run.

Frag Doll Morgan "Rhoulette FD" Romine, who stepped down from her role as Team Captain in 2011, made the announcement:

"Sad as it is to see something we have loved so much, for so long, reach its final days, there is a sweetness in this simple closure. As the wide community of gamers grows up, we are beginning to learn how to incorporate this burgeoning diversity into our cultural identity. There are growing pains, like with any cultural sea change. But as we say goodbye to the Frag Dolls, we welcome the emerging world in which it will be taken for granted that women do, of course, play and love games, because video games truly are for everyone."

Several members left earlier this year; a grand total of 22 were involved in the team at some point. Ubisoft didn't say why they were dismantling the Frag Dolls but at least they leave a solid legacy behind. For instance, there's the Cadette program that resulted in over 80 women getting jobs at places like Nintendo, Electronic Arts and Blizzard.

Well, we're sorry to see the Dolls go. But maybe they've served their purpose and it's time to move on.

The Frag Dolls were Ubisoft's pro gaming team, comprised entirely of women. They existed to promote Ubisoft shooters like Rainbow Six, and to prove that women could kick your ass in competitive online play as well as any man (the Frag Dolls were really, really good).

Despite the fact that Souljah is joking up there, plenty of neckbearded morons sincerely voiced that exact sentiment, because irony is awesome. They only existed because women are underrepresented in the industry, and then they were held up as proof that men were being discriminated against in the industry.

Some people are just plain dumb.

Unfortunately or fortunately, games for girls are not blockbusters because women don't play games like men. Women adore to put their fingers on everything involving men's world. I don't feel sorry for them. Adios and hasta la vista! And I don't like cultural diversity if this kind of thing is something imposed and not something that occurs naturally.

The idea that you think there are, or should be, 'games for girls' is exactly why groups like the Frag Dolls existed in the first place.

The fact that you think games are a "man's world" that women are intruding on is exactly why groups like the Frag Dolls existed in the first place.

The fact that you think women playing games is an 'imposition' and not something that's perfectly natural is exactly why groups like the Frag Dolls existed in the first place.

I said about cultural diversity and this concept involves many things and not only games, like you presumed. Don't say something assuming that the other person said only because you judged it.

I was sticking to the topic at hand, but I'm not sure how you clarifying your stance that you mean cultural diversity in general makes it any better. If we waited for certain things to 'happen naturally' we'd probably still be dealing with segregated school systems, Jim Crow, laws against interracial marriage and homosexuality, the gender equality gap would probably be much bigger than it is today, etc. etc. etc.

When you live in a country that is governed almost entirely by white Christian men, and where white Christian men are given disproportionate voice in whom they are governed by, and where most of the economy is also controlled by white Christian men, waiting for certain backwards cultural issues to magically resolve themselves is pretty silly. Unless you just want to keep the status quo, where only white Christian men have any voice in the way society works.

So we could get into all that if you want, but I thought it was just better to stick to the topic as it pertains to the Frag Dolls and gaming.

Given that ISIS is a group of religious extremists who absolutely hate cultural diversity, particularly when it comes to the equal treatment of women, I don't think I'm the one in this conversation who more closely resembles their thinking ;)

Who's saying I hate? I only dislike when people try to force it, like put women in a game company just to create an image of politically correct without a financial return.

Who is hiring women just to be 'politically correct'? The Frag Dolls weren't just ambassadors for women in games, they made Ubisoft money by promoting their product.

Do you even know anything about the topic, or are you just railing against the very idea of it because "ewww girls"?

I can see very well how much profit they made. Ubisoft is a very unfair company, no? haha

What?

Women?

Playing video games?

That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard!

We know damn well that this is a men-only club!
