Final Fantasy VII Goes Mobile, Offers Two Cheat Options

As lame as the cheating option is, it's still Final Fantasy VII.

The classic RPG has landed on mobile platforms; it is now available on the iOS App Store and it retails for $15.99.

This version is based on the PC version and doesn't offer any changes to the gameplay or story. Of course, without the standard controller, you'll have to use your tiny touchscreen to use a virtual analog stick or d-pad. Aside from that, nothing is really different from the original role-playing adventure, but they have added a couple lame-o options that might appeal to those with zero patience.

The first feature lets you disable random enemy encounters you'd normally face when exploring. Obviously, this sort of defeats the purpose of that exploration, as you need experience from those battles to grow stronger. But that problem can be fixed with the second option: It's a cheat code that maxes all your stats immediately.

Like I said, lame. But I'd probably rather play this on my phone than the FFVII Remake when it comes out. Yeah, I said it.

Grinding is the dumbest thing about old school JRPGs, especially if you just want to experience the story again, so I'm fine with the cheats. I used the other boosts that were included in the Steam versions of FFVII and VIII. Made them more enjoyable.

I always inevitably wish I wasn't so strong so that the fights would be more of a challenge.

Your way sounds super boring. ;)

Outside of optional bosses Final Fantasy in general doesn't have tough fights, and never will. It has a few cheap fights that you can't win without trial and error or having a guide. The one game I can think of that is an exception is FFX, since Gagazet Seymour and Yunalesca are both cheap as hell, but you can actually soldier through both fights the first time through if you have enough curatives on hand.

Of course then the game overcompensates by making it literally impossible to lose to the final boss.

I think their issue has been balancing. The bosses all have the same stats regardless of your personal level progression. The first time I played it (VII), I soldiered straight through the story and remained at a relatively low level throughout. My first time experience was definitely challenging from start to finish.

But branch off the beaten path even a little bit? And yeah... it gets easy quickly. They'd have been better off to have at least a little bit of scaling based on your level. FFXIII tried to balance that better by capping our levels in each chapter. It kind of worked, I guess, but definitely had some cons to it.

VIII had scaling enemy levels and most people hated it. I liked it, though.

I don't know. I found that regular random battles are annoying and not as fun when grinding. All other times they seem to go with the gameplay, and luckily you never really need to grind in some games (if you want the normal challenge). You do not need a guide, if you're using one, you're taking away from the gameplay. The goal is to find the weaknesses and what patterns work with dying as least as possible. Even for normal battles, like in FF6, I hated fighting those floating robots in the final dungeon so I looked for their weakness which turned out to be banish. It added a bit of fun, especially having to use MP efficiently.

Anyways, point is, you're doing it wrong (or they're just not your thing)

Personally, I like this idea because sometimes I just want to go through the story without having to battle/play the game.

If you hate grinding I have to assume you must be pretty young. I find grinding to be a rewarding experience. Getting to level 250 in Star Ocean? Oh, yes. Becoming strong enough to beat Ozma in FFIX without breaking a sweat? Yeah. Those are gaming achievements. Maybe they'll make Lego versions of popular JRPGs so someone like you can actually enjoy them.

FF1-6 have been on iOS and Android for years. What's wrong with putting these games on mobile?

I have Tactics on my phone and it is pretty sweet (though not without flaw). Couldn't imagine VII on a mobile device would be altogether terrible.

Yeah, same thing has happened before, leading to long time members going away and even an editorial complaining about FF fans...

Not looking forward to the next couple of years with comments like that in every FF article

I wouldn't have minded an option to turn off random battles in dungeons now and again. I say this because I just got done exploring Deus's place in Xenogears and because exp basically didn't matter I just wanted to get through it. Which I did. Then I fought sub-bosses for about an hour then died on Deus. It was my bad because I entered the fight with my best character low on Gear fuel.

That final dungeon is the absolute worst. Only time in the whole game I felt the weight of the grind.

Leveling up does help you have better odds of getting your more ultimate attacks that only cost 10 fuel up, though. :)

Thanks. I just did it though. Beat Deus (both forms.... Thank goodness you get fully restored for the 2nd form) and watched the ending. It was pretty close though I nearly exited the dungeon to go save up for 2 more Z chargers.

So this was Episode V eh?

Literally the only thing that kept me going through the final dungeon was the time I'd put in to get that far. lol

One thing I wish the game had done was give more credence to hand to hand combat. It became useless at the end, which was too bad. A combination would have been more rewarding.

With your attitude, the remake could very well be a masterpiece but you seem to be predisposed to hating it regardless. Seems kinda funny that for quite some time - pretty much the whole time that I've been following this site - you hyped the thought of a remake of VII and posted quite a few articles regarding such a thing... then it comes and you suddenly loathe the very notion. Sure, S-E has done some pretty stupid crap hot on the heels of X, but this isn't to say that they aren't still "capable" of something excellent. I'd like to think that, with such an adored universe, they're going to be very careful with this. Obviously, things will have to change and it is not going to be the original. To be honest, I think I am okay with that. I have my own reservations, true, but I haven't just resigned this remake to being garbage.

I don't know, man. I hope this remake exceeds your expectations. Sounds like you need it to.
