PlayStation 3 Sales Leap 135% In Two Weeks

We've heard about several major retailers selling out of the PS3, but we hadn't expected to hear any official July numbers from Sony until the end of the month. Wrong we were, though, as is reporting that SCEA has said PS3 sales have leaped 135% at their top five retailers in the U.S. These numbers were accumulated in the two weeks since the price cut, but even before that, sales of Sony's next-gen console were up 21% in June.

Sony's internal tracking has shown the vast increase in PS3 sales since they applied the new $499 price tag, which occurred back on July 9. In addition, they say total PlayStation hardware sales jumped by 161%, software sales increased slightly by 15%, and peripheral sales rose by 60%. You can see the official NPD sales numbers here, but to add to that report- SCEA noted the PlayStation brand "continued to exhibit solid growth evidenced by a 21 percent increase in total retail dollars generated year-over-year in North America with total sales of $393 million."

President and CEO of SCEA, Jack Tretton, further offered a general comment regarding the recent higher sales of PS3 hardware:

"The new price on the 60GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail," said Tretton. "This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction."
