Analysts Predict PS3 Outsold 360 In July

For most of 2007, the PS3 has been outsold by the Xbox 360 and especially the Wii, but Sony experienced a major upswing in sales when it dropped the price of their 60GB PS3 by $100 to $499. Of course, they're replacing it with the 80GB at some point - which is priced at the original $599 price point - but at least interest in the system is certainly higher than it once was. And furthermore, according to GameSpot, a couple analysts are predicting that the NPD numbers for July will show something very significant...

Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter and the SimExchange's Jesse Divnich are predicting that the PS3 will have outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time since Sony released their system last November. Pachter expects PS3 sales to come in at 160,000 with 360 sales at 115,000, while Divnich predicts 165,000 for the PS3 and 142,000 for the 360. In addition, Pachter has hinted that the 360's recent reliability woes and forced warranty extension may have put a damper on the system's sales for July. ...and that, obviously, wouldn't surprise anyone.

But even so, neither analyst believes Sony will top the dominant Nintendo systems. Divnich think the DS will once again top the charts for the month with 491,000 units sold and the Wii will come in at 369,000 units. Pachter's numbers are a little lower; he predicts the DS sold about 450,000 while the Wii sold around 330,000. Both analysts are guessing about the same for the PSP- Pachter expects sales of 225,000 for Sony's handheld and Divnich expects 238,000. But despite falling well behind the DS, these numbers are still somewhat encouraging, especially considering how much the PSP was lagging earlier this year.

With the holidays right around the corner, it seems more and more like all three companies are gearing up for a major war. And, quite frankly, that's exactly the kind of competition that will ultimately benefit the consumer.
