Square-Enix Hints At FF VII Remake Possibility

If you're aware of the history of this rumor, and you're capable of reading between the lines, the following may be the most concrete evidence to date that a Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS3 could be possible.

It all started with that incredible tech demo of Final Fantasy VII back at E3 2005 in order to show off the power of the PS3. However, despite the obvious speculation that followed, Square-Enix has remained firm that no such remake project is taking place. In fact, they shoot it down whenever they get the chance, sometimes even going into great detail as to why a FF VII PS3 remake would be far too costly and time-consuming. But that hasn't stopped the freight train that is this rumor, and now, it will only grow in strength.

Famitsu interviewed Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII executive producer Yoshinori Kitase, producer Hideki Imaisumi, director Hajime Tabata, and character designer Tetsuya Nomura to talk about the upcoming PSP blockbuster plus some other future games from the team. They first stated that Crisis Core is one massive game, taking up almost an entire UMD-ROM, but then Famitsu asked the big question- fans really want a FF VII remake, so are we getting one, or what?

In response, Imaizumi said such a remake would be a "question of timing," saying that Kitase, Nomura, and Tabata were all busy with Final Fantasy XIII. However, he did say a brand new game would be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show, although he didn't go into specifics. All we really know is that it's not Kingdom Hearts III, and Imaizumi confirmed once again that there are currently no plans for a FF VII remake...but here's where it gets interesting:

After saying this, he added that this decision "could take place very quickly," referencing the decision to make Crisis Core, which only took two days. Now, if you combine this with the "question of timing" comment, this is by far the closest Square-Enix has ever come to entertaining the notion of a Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS3. Each and every time up until this point, they would dismiss the idea out of hand, and even provide numerous reasons as to why the project would be mostly impossible.

It may not look like much to the uninitiated, but to those of us who have followed this from Day 1, it's a very, very significant change in tone and attitude. This year marks the 20th anniversary of FF, and S-E has said they won't finish up all the new announcements until the end of the year...now we can't wait until the end of the year. Or, if we're really lucky, it comes out at TGS...
