Sony's Hirai On Blu-Ray And PS3 vs. Xbox 360

Sony president Kazuo Hirai has had a lot to say lately, and he has issued some candid thoughts on Blu-Ray and the PS3, thanks to a recent interview from Hollywood In Hi-Def.

When asked how Blu-Ray would succeed with the likes of Betamax in their past, Hirai said they wanted to "provide developers with the absolute biggest canvas on which to create their games." Furthermore, from the movie side of things, he offered a mini-PS3 plug by saying it would be difficult for any film studio or retailer "to ignore the fact that there are already millions of Blu-Ray players in the world in the form of PS3." He finished with something few have been thinking about; the comparison to DVD: "That is the kind of installed base DVD only dreamed of when it launched and before we debuted PlayStation®2."

But at the core of the interview lies Hirai's thoughts on the PS3 verus Microsoft's Xbox 360; an on-going war that really doesn't have any solution. But nevertheless, here's his reply-

"I have heard many people say our competitors’ systems are just as powerful as PS3. That simply is not true. No other next-generation entertainment system pushes the envelope on advanced technology like PS3. I have heard people say that a high-capacity game delivery vehicle like Blu-ray isn’t necessary in a next-generation computer entertainment system. You just can’t expect that the 9 GBs of storage capacity found on today’s DVDs are going to have enough space to hold tomorrow’s games. Developers have already pushed the DVD to its limits in terms of space used. We had games like ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’ coming in 16 GBs at launch. That game simply wouldn’t be possible on any other system without using multiple discs. There is no doubt in my mind that you need more capacity on discs for truly next-generation gaming, and Blu-ray gives us that space."

We've heard some of this before, but the more we see it, the more we realize he does have a point. And with better-looking PS3 titles already appearing, and multiple developers stepping up and saying, "yeah, we can do a lot with this thing," the PS3 seems to be gearing up for a major upswing...especially if that cheaper 40GB PS3 model arrives this month, and Europe gets that 60GB PS3 price drop.
