Stringer Continues to Defend PS3 Pricepoint

In a story from Forbes, Howard Stringer continues to roll the dice with the $500+ entry point for the Playstation 3. The key quote from his latest press conference:

"The price of the PS3 is high, but you're paying for potential...Do you go for a cheaper transitional [product], or do you take a chance on future-proof, higher technology which will keep you going for many, many years?"

It would seem that the company's current plans set the console and the accompanying Blu-Ray technology as long-haul products meant to outlast the competition, thus justifying a price-tag for a machine that should last you longer than your average console.

Speaking of Blu-Ray, Stringer also continued to push its importance during his speech. He cited that movie-makers were beginning to realize the importance of the added storage space on a BR disc as opposed to HD-DVD.

Sony's strategy may be taking a lot of risks, but it's also sound in theory. The problem? Convincing the consumer of the same.
