Report: Sony Asks Third-Party Devs To Stick Around

It's no surprise that Sony doesn't have the market cornered on third-party support, and they may be struggling to hold on to previously loyal developers. According to a recent report in the Mercury News, it seems Sony is approaching these developers in order to keep their business. Here's a direct quote from the article-

"One piece of news that came out this week was that Sony pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling [PS3] platform," wrote Dean Takahashi of the San Jose Mercury News. "That change in attitude is a marked difference compared to the arrogance of past years. The argument is that the PS3 will show its strength as developers learn how to make games for it."

GamePro contacted Takahashi to clarify things, and he cited "insider information" on the subject. Given the difficulty developers are having with the PS3, it'd wouldn't be too shocking to learn that Sony has to work harder this time around to maintain support. However, we have seen developers warm up to the PS3 this year, and some are simply taking longer to produce their games for the system. Capcom, for example, backed the 360 during the console's first year, delivering major exclusives in the form of Dead Rising and Lost Planet. Then Devil May Cry 4 also went to the 360, causing debate and speculation...would Capcom develop for Sony again? Well, that was answered a week ago as the publisher announced they'd be focusing more on the PS3 next year, and revealed Lost Planet and Bionic Commando for Sony's new system.

We have no doubt Sony has probably had to scramble to keep developers happy, but hey, this is a multiplatform generation, anyway. Everybody is going to lose exclusives, but provided Sony keeps some of them - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Final Fantasy XIII, for example - things should turn out fine. We'll have to wait and see, though.
