DivX Officially Announced For PlayStation 3

We had heard the rumors, but it wasn't made official until today. According to Trading Markets, it has been announced that DivX video technology will be integrated into the PlayStation 3. Currently, there are over 100 million DivX Certified products on the market, and now, it seems obvious the PS3 will expand that number even further.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

Any product that bears the DivX Certified label has gone through a hefty testing program "to ensure a high-quality DivX media experience that includes reliable video playback and excellent visual quality." At this time, they're working to certify the PS3 and provide Sony's next-gen console with top-notch digital media technology. If you already own the system, you'll be able to add DivX to the console by simply downloading a system software update to be made available in the near future. As of now, PS3 developers can take advantage of DivX's decoder technology by downloading the latest system update (2.00), which released just last week.

With every passing month, it seems they add even more functionality to the PS3.
