Trend Micro Gives PS3 Web Security

Just about anything that goes online these days is subject to trouble, which is why Trend Micro has announced a new total Web security service for the PlayStation 3. According to Lowyat.net, there is currently a free "Trend Micro Web Security for PS3TM," which is the very first service built for a gaming system to block malicious websites using "URL filtering combined with Web reputation."

When the PS3 accesses a website, Trend Micro "in-the-cloud databases" are looked up. The URL filtering database then classifies the website into a category, and the Web reputation database evaluates the page, domain and IP address. Once you combine these two processes, some of those nasty sites you don't want your kids to see can be blocked. This is the kind of thing we're likely to see more of in the future; Microsoft, for example, is getting more "parent-oriented" in this new generation. They've already released the Parental Timer for the 360, which allows parents to restrict how much time their child plays the system. Via Trend Micro, the PS3 will be safe for anyone...provided it's used correctly.

The service is now available and is expected to remain free until the end of April 2008. We have no idea how much the service will cost when this complimentary free period is over, but we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we hear anything new.
