PSM3 Offers New Golden Axe Details

Remember the good ol' days when we all beat the hell out of numerous baddies in the Golden Axe arcade game? The next-gen resurrection is getting a bit of an overhaul, as it seems the latest info indicates a possible change in focus.

According to the latest issue of PSM3, Secret Level's highly anticipated revival of an old classic is undergoing a complete and total face-lift for its debut on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Firstly, you won't have your choice of the human barbarian, dwarf, etc.; you will play as only one Amazonian heroine, and she is pictured here. Introducing Tyris Flare...whom we fully expect to arrive on the pages of PlayBoy's annual "Girls of Gaming" feature next year. Gillus the dwarf and Ax Battler are in the game, but they're only in it as supporting cast, so make way for the hot female lead!

But even more important is the significant gameplay change in Golden Axe: Beast Rider: there will be free-roaming environments rather than straightforward linear levels. You can explore these diverse backdrops with one of five beasts, ranging from small and speedy to slow and powerful. Of course, you can always dismount and give Tyris some exercise, but it almost seems as if it's more about the exploring/discovering than it is about the combat. Still, the developers are going to need to institute a solid next-gen battle system for this game to work.

We're hoping to see more details on Golden Axe: Beast Rider before long, and if we're lucky, we'll see an official release date later on this year. The old classic is coming back, but it will definitely boast a modern-day look and feel.
