Epic: Sony Embraces "User-Created Content"

We all know by now that Epic Games chose the PlayStation 3 to be the lead platform for Unreal Tournament 3 - much to the chagrin of 360 owners, I imagine - but Epic VP Mark Rein has explained why the team made this decision. According to Gamasutra, it all centers on "how open" the game will be on the PS3.

"This is the full power of the Unreal Editor. The same editor we used to create the games is now available to you," Rein said. "You want to import your objects you made in 3D Studio Max or Maya? Bring them in! You want to code an UnrealScript? Code an UnrealScript! All those things you can do. If they fit on our map, you can stick them on the PlayStation 3 and they'll run!"

That's the kind of openness we appreciate: Rein pointed out that users can nab any content they wish from the online site, and it will work on the PS3 version of UT3. Epic has been talking about user-created content for quite a while, and this is an example of an "open system," so says Rein. Some will immediately ask the question; "yes, but can't you do this on the 360?" Well, according to Epic...they're really not sure. They were, however, certain with the PS3, which is why they chose Sony's platform.

"When they embrace user-created content, that's what it means to be an open system. That's why we're on PlayStation 3 firstóbecause they are embracing user-created content. It's not just moving the deck chairs around the boat. They are embracing real art," Rein continued. "...we will sit down with Microsoft and have a dialog with them and say, 'Here is what we want to do. How can we do it?' They may or may not embrace it. We don't know. That's why we've made the game for the PlayStation 3 first, because we knew exactly what the boundaries were going to be."

Rein says he believes a console manufacturer shouldn't be able to order a developer around; telling them exactly what kind of content will be allowed in a game. Yeah, we don't like that business philosophy, either, which means we're happy to hear Epic is siding with gamers on this one. Freedom, baby! That's a cornerstone of next-generation gaming.
