PS3 Update 2.01: Dual Shock 3 In "Early 2008"

Sometimes, we just have to look closer at the fine print we're so used to ignoring. Of course, this doesn't provide anyone with an exact release date, and the launch estimate is hardly surprising, but still... Info is info.

The nifty white Dual Shock 3 PlayStation 3 controller is already out in Japan but other regions are going to have to wait. We've all been wondering when Sony would provide gamers here in the US with a controller equipped with that "last-gen" feature, and it seems they already gave us a hint. Engadget has found such a hint, buried in a hidden message under the asterisked notation for "Vibration Function" in the PS3 firmware update 2.01. A little message in there says, "Available for purchase in early 2008," which we can only assume refers to the Dual Shock 3. Is there some other unit out there that supports rumble that we're unaware of? Nah, it's gotta be the DS3, and "early 2008" sounds just about right.

Lest any of you forget, this new controller doesn't sacrifice anything while adding the rumble/force feedback option. It maintains both the motion sensing and similar battery life as the Sixaxis, and some software already supports the rumble (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, for example). Let's hope Sony issues an official release date for the US before the holidays are over.
