MGS4 Frame Rate Fluctuations Almost Unnoticeable
After announcing the holiday take for the PlayStation brand and Skype for the PSP, Sony then moved on to display a few games at the Consumer Electronics Show 2008. One of them was the hotly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which evidently looks better than ever. However, those on hand have reported some curious frame rate fluctuations during the gameplay presentation.
In this most recent build of MGS4, the game would hold either 30 or 60 frames per second depending on the scene, or the amount of action occurring on-screen. Once again, attendees were treated to the same battlefield we saw at last year's E3, but this one apparently featured plenty of gameplay clips. When there wasn't a lot going on, it seems the game would lock in at a smooth 60 frames per second, allowing the textures to appear sharper in the background. But when the action intensified and combat effects began to assault the screen, the gameplay dropped to 30 frames per second. However, most say this frame rate shifting was hardly noticeable, and perhaps not even worth mentioning.
With the non-interactive cut-scenes rolling at a smooth 60fps and much of the game itself operating at the same speed, we probably shouldn't quibble. After all, we haven't seen any game that looks better than MGS4, and we're not about to question Konami's ability to make an awesome installment in the legendary franchise.
