Rockstar "Expects Angry Reaction" To GTAIV
With Grand Theft Auto IV looming on the horizon, there are already whispers from the mainstream media...whispers gamers and Rockstar know all too well. But this time around, Rockstar Games founder Dan Houser says the company "expects an angry reaction from certain corners of the media" when the game is released this April. Yeah, we figure they're used to it by now.
"I expect it because we've had so much of it in the past," Houser said at a recent game demonstration in North America. "I wish people would treat video games the same as other media," he said. "They seem to not want to do that for reasons that I don't understand. It's a convenient enemy for people." (source- CVG)
We don't get it, either, but then again, illogical rants from the galactically ignorant aren't meant to be understood. However, Rockstar may be facing even more flak this time around for GTAIV, because if you hadn't noticed, it's pretty darn realistic-looking. Houser said he wanted the fourth installment to distance itself from the "cartoony" aspects of previous entries, and the story will reflect the new atmosphere and environment.
"If the graphics are slightly cartoony, we make sure the writing is slightly cartoony to match that," he said. "Obviously, the graphics have gone closer to realism, so we wanted everything else to be closer to realism as well."
And that's bound to set off the anti-game activists, so it's no surprise Houser and Co. is expecting a backlash. But they're probably not too concerned. Sure, they'll spend some time in court (so what else is new?), the media will latch on to yet another perceived reason to dump on the industry, parents will be all outraged because it's evidently not their responsibility to look at ratings on boxes...and Grand Theft Auto IV will sell a bazillion copies. The business world never stops turning.
