PS3 Rumor #2: Lighter, Thinner Model?
The rumors of a new PlayStation 3 model are running rampant - and are probably true - but this is the first we're hearing of something besides a hard drive upgrade: according to T3, the new PS3 might actually boast a complete cosmetic overhaul.
It seems they stumbled across this information at last month's Consumer Electronics Show, where a "well-informed insider" said Sony is preparing an "all-new" PS3 model. This one, just like the PSP-2000, is "slimmer and lighter." This doesn't sound entirely out of the question, as the PS3 is easily the biggest and heftiest console out there, and consumers love smaller electronics. Look what happened with the mini-PS1, the slimmed-down PS2, and the recent redesign of the PSP; the latter move generated quite the sales spike for Sony, so why shouldn't a smaller PS3 be on the horizon? But at this point, can we say that both the 120/160GB w/Dual Shock 3 PS3 rumor and this "thinner, lighter" PS3 rumor are referring to the same machine? That's the million-dollar question.
There's really no chance of getting anything out of Sony right now - nothing but the "no comment" reply will come back - so it seems obvious we'll have to wait a few more weeks until GDC 2008. We expect all the answers at that time.

For the rest of the world outside Japan I don't think smaller home electronics is an issue. Look at the size of our TV’s; we try to get as big as we can afford, bigger the better right?
For portable products that’s where you need them to be smaller and lighter, and why it was necessary for the PSP. I don't think the size decrease in PSP-2000 has made an noticeable difference in your pocket but being lighter has helped.
With Sony reducing the size of the blu-ray diode this will help them produce more cost effective and smaller blu-ray drives, so technically the PS3 can be smaller as soon as the new drives are built in. But I don't think these new drives will be implemented in PS3 for a while yet so I don't think a slimmer PS3 will be announced at GDC, unless Sony are far in development with the smaller blu-ray diode?
Maybe T3 are taking their info from an insider who told them about the smaller blu-ray diode and the possibility of how it could make blu-ray products smaller including the PS3? So T3 are guessing and the will look good if they guessed right.
