Square-Enix To Confirm PS3 MMO At GDC

The Game Developers Conference 2008 is only a week away, and there is the possibility we will see the official unveiling of Square-Enix's new MMORPG for the PS3.

According to the official GDC 2008 website, four members of the veteran publisher will be speaking at the event, and one of them is Taku Murata, the head of Square-Enix Research & Development. He'll be talking about the process regarding engine development, plus the confirmation of a new MMORPG. "The new game engine will be used for FINAL FANTASY XIII, new MMORPG under development, and other titles in the future." Now, Forever-Fantasy is speculating this mystery game is actually Final Fantasy Haresis XIII, a MMO scheduled to be released for the PlayStation 3 at some point down the road. It uses the White Engine - like FFXIII - and it could be one hell of a great addition to the PS3's library. Besides, it's always good when a console gets one of the MMO genre.

Obviously, this should be confirmed at the conference, so we'll just wait for the final word in one week's time. However, in the meantime, it's always fun to wonder, speculate, and even expect.

Man when did GDC become more exciting than E3? Not that I'm complaining in the least.

@Shadow: Only a few years ago when they downsized the E3 to an industry-only conference. This makes TGS and GDC the biggest shows of the year. (E for All was a big failure last year, too few company's showed up.)

Now about the topic, I'm hoping it tries to keep some of the elements of FFXI. I played only for a short while but it was still fun even though there was a large annoying 'grind' session just to level up. (Call me crazy, but I actually was kind of fond of those.)

I was more or less just pointing the fact out but thanx. I just never remember GDC being all that big of a news event. Last year there was the Home and LBP announcements and this year there's just a ton going on. It's pretty cool.

Another FF MMORPG will have to be considerably different from XI as XI is still going strong, with it's most recent expansion just released at the end of last year, and an update coming in a few weeks. However, I do believe there is supposed to be an MMORPG being developed by SE for the XBOX360, perhaps this will be an announcement for the PS3 version?

I believe that a FF7 will come to PS3 but don't expect any announcement until FFXIII is out. They don't want to overshadow there current game by rereleasing one of the best games ever. I say start getting ancy come GDC 09.
