Clarificiation: GTAIV Online Multiplayer For Both PS3 And 360

It's a general rule of thumb that when being interviewed, you should be careful about what you say. Sometimes, even a simple mistake can kick off a rumor firestorm that is very difficult to counter.

At first, Rockstar's Don Mattrick gave Xbox 360 owners another reason to gloat with the following quote during an interview with Major Nelson:

"It's (GTAIV) an amazing piece of software and I'm really excited with its downloadable content and online multiplayer support. Again, that's something that's unique to 360." He added, "We think consumers are going to love that and it's going to create, what I would describe again as the premium experience on our platform."

Obviously, this implies that both the downloadable content and online multiplayer support are "unique to the 360," which got everyone all riled up. However, Rockstar quickly confirmed to CVG that this was just a wording mistake, and that online multiplayer would indeed be available for both the 360 and PS3 versions of Grand Theft Auto IV. By now, we know the 360 version is getting exclusive episodic content right off the bat, but the PS3 version will be getting its DLC later (and it will probably be exclusive to the PS3). It would make little sense for the multiplayer to be limited to one platform, but we were concerned there for a minute... Anyway, it's all cleared up now.

I'm still disappointed in Rockstar for going to the 360, i mean i know they want money but damn they can't forget what the PS2 has done for them. They should take a page from Kojima and be Loyal a little.

Yeah... No

Thank Jehovah this game is coming out for both platforms.
I respect loyalty; but, comeon, its a videogame.

By a non-japanese company, no less.

Of course they can't forget what the ps2 has done for them. After all, where do you think they got the budget for this game.
Atleast take pride in knowing that.

Besides, what are you a bigger fan of? The Playstation, or videogames in general?

This duel platformness is doing nothing but strengthening the brand, ya know.
In capitalism money=power; and the 360 version will make more then the ps3 version.
Thus, catupulting rockstar into more money. Thus, even better games in the future.

Besides, I have a 360; and no money for a ps3.
And I want this game!!

Also, using Kojima isnt the best example, seemings how the ps3 stomps the 360 in the jap market.
Obviously, the same cant apply for a us game in the us.

Besides.... I have a Xbox...

Long live GTA on the 360!!!

I have to agree with Samus. I own a PS3 and welcome the fact that publishers are porting to multiple systems. A larger available market should, if all things are equal, mean more potential revenue and more incentive to produce rich satisfying content.

However this is not all roses and lollipops. As we are seeing with GTA4, back room deals can lead to imbalances in favor of one console over another. We have been told that the 360 will get exclusive content, leaving me to feel that I will be paying the same price as a 360 owner for an incomplete copy of the title. I would be less bothered by this if the additional missions were extra downloadable content at an additional cost. But extra content just for picking one console over another is a slap in the face to loyal fans that have followed the franchise for so long and just happened to incorrectly guess which console to buy.

For your information I am a loyal GTA fan and have bought copies of every available GTA iteration since the franchises inception.

Why can't I see GTA multiplayer being fun in the least? Co-op would be cool but I think multiplayer would be a snooze fest.

I think Rockstar has to do whatever it takes to make the biggest profit without losing quality in their games. Loyalty vs. tens of millions is not even a fair fight.

This whole downloadable content thing is a joke to me. I'm assuming it will cost money. But they started planning this out a year ago. If you are working on this as early as they are this should be in the box. We shouldn't have to pay extra for something that was finished in time to be in the actual game. This is the actually worse than a zero-day patch as far as I'm concerned.

not a GTA fan, but glad to see GTA fans on both sides will be getting multiplayer. I can see how those words can easily be taken the wrong way.

On the note of DLC, I'm no fan of paying for DLC, not for so little of something. Already paying $60 a game! Nor am I a fan of DLC that is exlusive to one system. It's slaping one customer in the face, and patting the other on the back. I for one own both systems, and multiplatform games I tend to get based on the type of game. Single player games on PS3, multiplayer FPS games on 360. I'm also focused on which platform has the most content too though. LIVE! updates sooner than PSN does too.

Hope you GTA fans get some well deserved DLC that hopefully will easily rival the XBOX360 version.

Well GTA4 should be as good if not better on the PS3, the reason I say this is because I agree that GTA ‘feels’ like it should be on a playstation system only, its weird that its going to be on an Xbox. Don’t get me wrong, im not flaming or being a fanboy.. I have nothing against the 360 having it, its just one of those games that owes a hell of a lot to the Playstation name and will always be imo a Playstation game. And although the others are on the Xbox, many people said they just didn’t ‘feel’ the same. So even if GTA4 plays exactly the same on both consoles, it will come down to the feel for the console, so for me personally GTA4 will probably feel better on a PS3 rather than if I played it on a 360. its funny how just a simple joypad can make a difference like what console you buy a game for…

But and I repeat.. I have nothing against the 360 having it!!

Though there was a rumour banging about after the whole “Sony taking R* under their wing” was that GTA5 would be a PS3 exclusive, everything on that has gone quiet, so probably not true.. but there’s no smoke without fire.

As for the news about GTA online, I take it that it will be like a bigger version of the psp multiplayer game? Will be interesting if it’s a general online game like in lobby’s etc.. or if you can only have a couple of you running about? If you think how Burnout handles online, and then think that GTA could run as well.. I would be quite happy with an 8 player deathmatch over Lib City!!

Even better if it was possible the PS3 and 360 could play each other, though with exclusive content ahoy for each console, that will never happen.

I'm pretty sure the whole Sony taking Rockstar as an adopted child kind of thing didn't neccesarily have anything to do with GTA. The way I understand it LA Noire and an unannounced new IP are supposed to be PlayStation exclusives.

Now about PS3 vs. 360 online. It cannot and will not ever happen for any game. Live is a closed network. The only way PC and 360 connectivity works is if the PC version of the game is also exclusively on live (Windows Live). This is why so few games have cross platform play between 360 and PC. The way I understand it PSN can support cross platform play, Epic thought about doing it with UT3, but because a 360 can only connect to Live this is not possible.
