NPD: PlayStation 3 Outsells Xbox 360 & Ties Wii in Jan. 08

  NPD results for last month are out and January 2008 marks a momentous month for the PlayStation 3, as for the first time ever in the US, Sony's once struggling console has considerably outsold the Xbox 360, and came within splitting hairs of outselling the Nintendo Wii. The PlayStation 3 moved into the hands of 269,000 consoles, compared to 230,000 of the Xbox 360 - close to a staggering 40k unit difference.

   The Nintendo Wii just barely edged out the PlayStation 3 as it sold 274,000, a difference of a mere 5k consoles. And the PlayStation 2 is still a powerhouse, selling 264,000 systems. On the handheld side of things, the Nintendo DS didn't perform as expected, either, selling 251,000 units. The Sony PSP wasn't too far behind, with an estimated 230,000.

   The numbers come as a shock to many, as they are significantly lower than what was predicted by both the Sim Exchange and Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. The Nintendo Wii was expected to sell close to 400k, the Xbox 360 was expected at nearly 290k, and the PlayStation 3 was predicted to sell 210k. It just goes to show how unreliable analysts and prediction websites are.

VGchartz numbers has had the 360 outsell the PS3 every week, shows how full of it they are.

VGC and other websites are ran by guys who live in an attic somewhere, without the least bit credibility or industry contact. They have no sources that give them those numbers, they're made up.

Wow! Not only did the xbox360 lose to the PS3 but the PS2 as well and tied the PSP.

Wait, why is the PS2 still selling so well? Last time I checked nothing big and exclusive was released on it recently?

But seriously, would it kill Sony to just reduce the PS2's price to $90? Not only would they spark more sales in hardware but in software as well.

Finally starting to feel like PS3's sales momentum is coming together. The Halo wind behind Xbox 360's back is waning. We have every reason to believe that 2008 is going to be the year of the PS3. Strong exclusive titles, lower price, and Blu-Ray dominance are going to establish the PS3 as THE console to buy.

But I don't consider the Wii numbers to be very accurate, they're artificially low due to heavy shortages during January.

The Wii in my opinion is only outselling others because it is in big demand from little children who want to play Mario and other last gen titles. Hardcore gamers seem to prefer the PS3 and 360, sadly core gamers don't have their moms buying their gear for them! I know my mom wouldn't :-( lol

Dare I say that the novelty may finally be running out? It's impossible to compare the wii to ps3 and 360 because the wii is so different. it appeals to a different market with very different hardware.
