GDC 2008: Analog Control Patch For Lair

Remember that news story about Lair potentially returning with standard analog controls? Factor 5's president Julian Eggebrecht admitted they made a big mistake by not offering this as an option, and they were considering righting that wrong.

Well, according to IGN Blogger DugBuzz, he saw these revised controls on display at GDC 2008, and they'll be coming in "Q1." Obviously, this is going to be huge news, because if it hadn't been for the control issues, Lair could've been amazing. Here's what DugBuzz had to say after trying out the new analog controls-

"I played it and Holy sh**; Greg needs to give them a new score. It was kind of clear that Factor 5 put in the extra effort a little begrudgingly, but the results were amazing. This might push me over the edge into the “must buy PS3” territory.

I also mentioned Greg Miller’s name, and the Factor 5 guys burned a hole through my skull with their looks of hatred. I think they’ll be alright once the patch is out for a while though."

Yeah, he's referring to the IGN reviewer who gave Lair a very low 4.9, and he won't be the only critic who might have to write up a whole new review. Ours is far more realstic (in our humble opinion), but we'll probably have to do the same. It's definitely good news, though; when this control patch hits, Lair might finally be the "must-buy" title PS3 owners initially hoped it would be!

hmm you know, unless the analog controls are far different from what I'm thinking it'd be, I think it would be better left with the motion controls...sure they could've used a bit more refinement, but I've seen it as the "only" way to play it.

and here's where I'm speaking from:

anyone else ever have their Sixaxis unsync during the game? I found it with my DS3 from time to time, and limited controls seemed to return back to the analog sticks. I couldn't do certain moves (like a quick 180 turn around) but the basic flight mechanics - steer, dip, etc - were in my control. it was clunky at best.

granted, this will be a lot more fluid when the patch comes, but I guess I'm in the minority when it comes to the controls in Lair.

Well...the controls were difficult I guess...but I got used to them, but I don't think the controls were the only problem. Game was pretty short and not much replayability, they should add like multiplayer, knock the price down, add some levels or something. Might be worth the $50-60 then

I don't understand why it took them so long to do this. If you plug in any standard USB pad it'll work with the game - you just won't be able to perform certain SixAxis tricks. So, all Factor 5 had to do was map a few button commands for the tricks.

The patch should've arrived a week after the game launched. Too little, too late.

Did anyone take note of the Lair add-on newly added to the store today? Analog controls! I guess the patch wasn't a hoax. Might actually be worth playing now.
