80GB PS3 Out Of Stock At Major Online Retailers
This time last year, you couldn't give 'em away...even if you could find one. Now, the online branches of major retailers all across the country are reporting that they are out of stock of the 80GB PlayStation 3 model.
According to Punch Jump news, the online divisions of Amazon.com, Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart currently hold an "out-of-stock" status for 80GB model, which is priced at $499. This may not come as a big surprise, what with the big software exclusives on the way and the recent Blu-Ray format war victory. For the first time ever, the PS3 outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 in January, and Sony plans to release a Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 bundle right around the time of the blockbuster game's launch. They also plan to release the Dual Shock 3 controller in the US next month, and all of this has come together to spur hardware sales.
Sales should continue to rise with the release of games like MGS4 and later on down the road, Gran Turismo 5 and Final Fantasy XIII. For now, though, sales are good and Sony now has to work to handle this new demand.
