Rockstar: GTA MMO "The Holy Grail"
One must remember that, in this new age of consoles, the MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) genre isn't only possible, it's very probably that it will appear on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In fact, a few released last generation for the PS2, and more - like The Agency - are headed our way this generation. That being said, wouldn't it make perfect sense for Grand Theft Auto to enter the world of the MMO? Wouldn't that just be...perfect?
Well, according to 1Up (via Eurogamer), Rockstar boss Sam Houser has said a GTAIV MMO "is very, very doable and is a very, very compelling proposition." He even goes so far as to say that a subscription, console-based GTA MMO would be like "the Holy Grail," which leads us to believe he's awfully interested in the idea of bringing the legendary franchise online. We're talking about going well beyond downloadable content, here; we're talking about something like Everquest, only subtract the fantasy RPG theme and add in a modern-day, underground crime syndicate concept. Of course, the basic idea behind the MMO - freedom - would remain, which is what makes those games so appealing in the first place. We're not big fans of the MMO (most in the past have been little more than virtual chat rooms, in our estimation), but even we have to admit this idea sounds excellent.
The sheer number of possibilities is truly staggering, but we're wondering how Rockstar would keep Liberty City from turning into a warzone in the span of six and a half seconds. I mean, anarchy can be cool and all, but it kinda gets old after just a few minutes. We need some law and order, damnit! Well, there will certainly be a few obstacles, that's for sure, but we still say it's a very sweet idea.
