Rockstar: GTA MMO "The Holy Grail"

One must remember that, in this new age of consoles, the MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) genre isn't only possible, it's very probably that it will appear on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In fact, a few released last generation for the PS2, and more - like The Agency - are headed our way this generation. That being said, wouldn't it make perfect sense for Grand Theft Auto to enter the world of the MMO? Wouldn't that just be...perfect?

Well, according to 1Up (via Eurogamer), Rockstar boss Sam Houser has said a GTAIV MMO "is very, very doable and is a very, very compelling proposition." He even goes so far as to say that a subscription, console-based GTA MMO would be like "the Holy Grail," which leads us to believe he's awfully interested in the idea of bringing the legendary franchise online. We're talking about going well beyond downloadable content, here; we're talking about something like Everquest, only subtract the fantasy RPG theme and add in a modern-day, underground crime syndicate concept. Of course, the basic idea behind the MMO - freedom - would remain, which is what makes those games so appealing in the first place. We're not big fans of the MMO (most in the past have been little more than virtual chat rooms, in our estimation), but even we have to admit this idea sounds excellent.

The sheer number of possibilities is truly staggering, but we're wondering how Rockstar would keep Liberty City from turning into a warzone in the span of six and a half seconds. I mean, anarchy can be cool and all, but it kinda gets old after just a few minutes. We need some law and order, damnit! Well, there will certainly be a few obstacles, that's for sure, but we still say it's a very sweet idea.

im not sure.. Im a GTA addict, but this sounds like something EA would do.

I quite like my cosey world of waiting til Oct for the latest GTA game, sitting down and playing for 6 months. I like that.

But paying for an online world.. I dont know. First off I dont like subs, I never have, and unless it becomes the norm for Sony/ other devs n publishers to charge for online gaming when MMO's come out on teh PS3, im not too sure I want to pay for that.

Its hard to say, maybe if more info comes out I would be more in to the idea, but for now, it just sounds like a good money making idea. Like I say.. something that EA would do if they owned TT.

Its like ive always wanted City of Heroes and Galaxies to come out on the Playstation, and I might pay for Galaxies.. but GTA has always been a one time payment, it would be hard to go from that to paying every month for it.

mind you, we might be used to paying for for DLC for GTA, so maybe it wouldnt be 'that' bad when it comes down to it.

for me, turning GTA in to an MMO, its like having custom music in GTA, I dont want custom music. GTA has alyways been about what R* can offer us, they pick the music and I love that, custom music for me is like watching the original SHAFT film to the sound track of 50p .. sorry, im mean 50Cent. in other words WRONG!

I think its lazy to have custom music, and in some ways might be considered lazy to have an MMO of GTA, all they have to do is create a one time world, then every now and again make a new sofa for us to buy.. lol.

ok, maybe im over reacting.. yes, im definitely over reacting, sorry.

I love the idea but your right all thoughs people too many weapons and chaos would be going off. i think they should make a separate game for a mmo it would be cool to be able to go to other citys and BFGs like in san andreas

i was about to write a comment about b! ching about how this could be potentially a big let down. then i had an epiphany. Imagine joining what would usually be a guild in other games, but a "GANG" in this, and doing things that would profit your gang, like selling drugs to NPCs etc. And trying not to get a 'cap popped in our ass' by the hundreds of rival gangs while doing so. Or, being the gang that pops caps in other gang drug runners asses (shoots them) and loots that gangs drugs! oh, the gang fights would be great! As long as the cities are enourmous, and there are multiple (perhaps every city in every GTA game ever)

So, ive come to the new conclusion that this game would be great. Although, dillonthebunnys comment was absolutely correct, money would be the only set back for this. i hate paying for games. If it was a one time payment then that would make this game amazing.
