GTAIV Will Cost $120 In Australia

Occasionally, certain regions just get shafted when it comes to certain video games. This time around, it's Australia and Grand Theft Auto IV, which is gonna cost the Aussies an arm and a leg, according to confirmed pricing reports from Kotaku and Rockstar.

It seems GTAIV will carry a retail price tag of $119.95 in the land down under, and no, that is not for the special Collectors edition...that's just for the standard edition. This price is the same for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, too, so don't think you can save some bucks by purchasing one over the other. As for the Collectors edition, you'll have to be prepared to shell out $149.95. Now, the difference between US and Australian funds isn't that huge - $60 is about AU$65 - so essentially, gamers in Australia are going to be paying double for GTAIV. This just sounds insane, doesn't it?

Rockstar hasn't issued any comment besides confirming these prices are correct, so we're left wondering- why the massive cost? Has this happened before with GTA installments in Australia? Does it cost that much more to distribute the game over there? Extra air time for the airplanes means a lot of extra gas, after all, and with gas prices the way they are... Yeah, but still, these are pretty hefty price tags. Sorry, Aussie gamers.

I'd just import lol, screw buying it at a local retailer. The shipping and handling can't be that bad to import something right?

probly cause the government is trying to limit a fan base to such a violent game by making it so expensive

Probably because Australia's govt or whoever is taxing GTAIV like mad - hence raising the price of the game and restricting sales of it. At this rate it's probably cheaper for them to import the game..

It's not tax. RRP for new PS3 games in Oz is AUD$109.95, but EB is the only store that actually sells them at that price.

Stores like Target, Kmart, BigW (these are Walmart equivalents) sell them for AUD$79 (USD$73) in the week of their release. That's the cheapest you'll get from a retail store, but you can get pretty much any big game at that price in it's first week.

And yes, it's much cheaper to import. PS3 non-region locked games FTW.

I live in New Zealand and if its $120 in Aussie its probably going to be like $140-$150 here. I import all my games though so I don't care but my friends are going to have a nasty suprise.

That pricing is quite harsh. I'd have typically expected pricing in the region of $95-$100 AUD judging on historical exchange rates. I've can't remember ever seeing the AUD/USD rates so close.

Sure in ireland it'll cost about €70, which is about $120 AUS. So its not like they're the only ones getting screwed.
