Resistance 2 "A 50 Gig Game"

When it was revealed that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots would take up about 50 gigs worth of space on a Blu-Ray disc, it was one of the biggest news stories of the year. Just about everyone was talking about it, and now, it seems they'll have something else to talk about.

If you check out this video that features Sony's Scott Steinberg and Naughty Dog's Evan Wells, you'll hear something very intriguing. After talking about the Blu-Ray victory, the current state of the PlayStation brand and the future of gaming in general, a small bombshell drops: it seems the upcoming Resistance 2 will also be a "50gig game." Now, one of the biggest benefits of Blu-Ray has always been the amount of space available, but 50 gigs is definitely pushing it. Some believe Konami simply needed to do some compressing work to keep the data in check, but if that's the case, why would Insomniac use the same amount of space for their blockbuster? ...perhaps because they can?

We'd like to get a clarification on this issue from the game's developers, but until then, this is bound to spark plenty of debate. MGS4 uses 50gigs, Resistance 2 uses 50gigs; what the heck is going on around here?

This is nuts. I am pretty sure they just aren't compressing until late into development or something. Pretty soon game developers will have to plan better. Something isn't right if they are filling up dual layer discs within 18 months of a console release. I don't remember hearing anything like this with PS2 and its DVD drive. Also, Oblivion is one of the biggest games I have played and it is on a single layer DVD. Takes up almost 4.7 GB's.

I'm starting to think that these games with all this "50gig game" are just going to be filled with lots of videos, voices, music, etc and very little actual gameplay :( For MGS4 to be nothing but lots of videos....i'm going to be REALLY REALLY pissed and saddened...soon it'll be watch 15 minutes of video...shoot 1 baddie...30minutes of more vehicle game....45 minutes video...something blows up...ending video....30 minutes...

Oh come on, don't get your panties all in a bunch. You know Insomniac isn't going to put abunch of video's and not enough gameplay in r2. It's going to be one of the best titles of this year. They'll deliver, and everyone who has a ps3 will own this. Hopefully they've added more customization to the multiplayer, instead of your character changing depending on when your XP increases.

I think companies now need to give the gamers more ability to think outside the box and give us mods, customization man! thats what it all comes down to, because thats what keeps gamers playing because it never gets old!

its crazy
they are stupid

im sure they just put uncompressd multichannel audio and use MPEG1 or MPEG2 HD video on tthe game.

its just ridiculusly stupid . . .

its better if they just put all of the media on high compression format like H264 and ogg audio...

it wont take much space, and the free-space can be used for better things, like hmm, a trailer? ROFL

Why compress the data when its not neccassary? Wouldn't you prefere 7:1 surround sound at the highest quality with high bitream HD movies if it doesn't interfere with the gameplay? And if the devs want space for gameplay and they need the sapce then they could compress whatever they wanted at any levels of compression. Why have HD gaming machines with HDTV's and HDMI's only to watch a poor quality video in our games.
A good example is the Gears on DVD for 360 all the videos was of a poor quality and the quality of the ending video was like something from youtube only in hi-def resolution.
If the space is there, then use it, why have blu-ray if a game is so compressed it only takes up 8gb of space, small enough to fit on dvd.

I agree. Why compress when you don't have to. That's the beauty of having 50 gigs of space. My video and audio can be delivered in the highest quality. That's the whole point, right? Next-gen, anyone? Leave the compressed video and audio for games systems that only have capability of reading DVDs.

bamf i totally agree with you. that is the point of blu ray so you don't have to compromise your game. and until the developers start by making there games for the ps3 and compress the shit out of the 360 version or make them have to pay extra for content download or whatever cause it wouldn't fit on a dvd. we are going to get short games. i'm not saying games should 40hrs to beat but games like Gears,COD4,Army Of Two to name a few could have been longer.
