Reuters: PS3 Update 2.20 Set For April 8
Last week, we learned all about the upcoming software update 2.20 for the PlayStation 3, which will enable the very cool new feature, BD-LIVE. At the time, we said it would arrive "later this month," but now it seems an actual date has been set, and it's a bit later: April 8.
The following is taken directly from a Reuters article announcing Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's release of the first batch of Blu-Ray movies that "can be connected to the Internet for more bonus materials and features." Yep, that's BD-LIVE:
"The musical spoof "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" and the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi thriller "The 6th Day" will be the studio's first two BD-Live titles. Their release coincides with the launch of a new software update for Sony's PlayStation 3 that makes the game console the first Blu-ray player with Internet connectivity, an ability known as "Profile 2.0."
Now, if you take that literally, it means the update will hit on April 8. However, it could also mean that April 8 would be the absolute latest update 2.20 could be available. Either way, this is further confirmation that it's not far off, and Reuters also reminds us that all Blu-Ray players will eventually have this movie/online feature, known as "Profile 2.0." As for those first two Blu-Ray movies to boast the ability, they will include downloadable theatrical and home video previews, plus a FAQ regarding BD-LIVE functionality. Many more options - like wallpaper and ringtones - will be featured in the service as well. Stay tuned for an official launch date (if Sony provides one).
