SCEA: GT5 "Still About A Year Away"

Racing fans are all clamoring for the imminent release of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue in North America, and we strongly recommend you pick it up. Some gamers out there may be saying, "why should I pay $40 for a demo when I can just pay $60 for the full game?"

Yeah, well, there are two very good answers to that question. The first is that Prologue isn't exactly one of those 10-minute demos that pop up on the PlayStation Store every now and again. With more than 60 cars and 6 tracks, it's closer to a fully realized game than a demo. The second reason you shouldn't pass on Prologue to wait for GT5 is provided by SCEA Associate Producer, Chris Hinojosa-Miranda, who just recently posted over at the official PlayStation blog. He replied to one of the readers who commented on his "The 'Mixtape'" post, and he said-

"Also, to further clarify, GT5 is still about a year away."

So you can either choose to have a healthy dose of Gran Turismo 5 within the next few weeks, or you can just wait a year. ...honestly, that shouldn't be a difficult decision to make. Prologue is going to kick much ass, and with GT5 still a ways off, racing fans have no reason to miss out.

Damn, I thought GT5 was coming this year. I'm getting GT5P regardless.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I downloaded GT5 a few days ago from the Asia PSN store. Whilst the demo is great to show off the power of RSX, to be honest I wasn't that impressed with the handling of the car at all. Granted, I don't have a wheel, I think this game is best played with a wheel, but I feel handling and gameplay improvements could be made for controller-based players. I found Dirt, especially the multi-car racing secions (which admittedly are more arcady) far easier and enjoyable to play. I played GT5 for an hour and haven't picked it up since. I may have another crack at it in a few days time... but the annoying wheel screeching sounds and frustrating handling has not impressed me. Visually it is one of the best games I have seen, and probably the best modeling of cars in any game that has graced any computer entertainment system, including the PC. Other than that let us hope the full game is far more enjoyable. I am sure with feedback Polyphony will do what they can to make it better for a quick "pick me up and drive me" game.

Other issues users will come across are:-

1] Online lobby is a little clumsy and slow (in asia anyway, can't say for the Euro and USA release)

2] When you slide across gravel/sand trap... car slides across it and hits the barriers far to easily... usually it should dig in and stop quite quickly. When trying to drive out the sand trap it is very slow - which is the way it should be

What about the handling bothered you? Did you play on standard or professional settings? Traction and traction managements on or off?

Arnold, the problem is my version of GT5 is in simplified chinese which does not help. What I did is I played with 'default' settings, out the box... I would expect the settings then to be at least set as Arcade and not Professional. At the moment I haven't tweaked any settings due to the menus understandably. Anyway, on the standard settings, with the controller, I find it very different to games like Dirt, ProStreet etc. I think a wheel would be fine, but it should be more accessible than it is.
