Kojima On MGS4: "1 Out Of 10"

Now that's an attention-grabbing headline, isn't it? Obviously, it's something we need to clarify, and a point that is being misinterpreted throughout the Internet today.

A couple months ago, Australian game site GamePlayer issued an article detailing their play-through of an early build of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and an impromptu meeting with Hideo Kojima. The article claims that, through an interpreter, Kojima said he tried to make MGS4 a "10" but sadly, he only "ended up with a 1." However, before you start reading too much into this, please bear in mind that he is not slamming the game or the PlayStation 3 hardware; he's merely saying it's a "1" based on his insanely high expectations for this project. Kojima is always like that. He wants to produce something incredible, and he doesn't like to fall short. There is also the possibility that he was talking more specifically about the PS3, saying it's only a "1" of what the system could - potentially - do.

But either way, don't go jumping to conclusions about Kojima's quote. The man strives to top everything in the industry at all times, and he'll be the first to admit that he probably never hits his uber-lofty goals. But even when he falls short, the games aren't that shy of genius, so we ain't worried.

Anyone checked the accuracy of his interpreter?
Anyway, Kojima always seems less that impressed with his own rather impressive work.
A perfectionist is never happy with "almost perfect". But it doesn't stop them getting something as "almost perfect" as is possible.

Ok.. Let's break this down.. Think back for a moment. Has Kojima ever failed to blow-away his fans with some of the most awesome games ever? Well.. with that in mind.. now add this.. Kojima is a perfectionist, he wants to create something so awesome.., so incredible.. that it just makes your mind explode, and makes your eyes melt right outta your head like that dude from Raiders of the Lost Ark. He wants to impress his fans so much.. and that's a respectable quality in my book. It's rare these days that someone sets the bar so high, and strives for perfection. When Kojima says "1 of 10" (and i agree with Razel, interpretation should be checked..), he means "Theres soo much more we can do.." In a world of "Screw it, they'll buy it" and "Good enough" mentality, This is an inspiring statement. Kojima has not once fallen short of spectacular, unlike coutless other developers I can think of..
This game will no doubt be one of the best games ever created, Will Kojima be satisfied? Probably not, be I can guarentee you this.. we will be.
