PS3 News: New Store Won't Be Region Locked

New Store Won't Be Region Locked

The new-look PlayStation Store will be sitting on your screens at home in less than two weeks, but in the meantime, we've been looking high and low for new details concerning the overhaul. The latest bit of info should allow avid Store users to heave a big sigh of relief, because we know you have several master accounts for multiple regions...

Gaming Age asked SCEA whether or not we'd still be able to access different regions on the Store, and thankfully, the official answer is as follows- It is "confirmed that no changes to the store will be made as part of this revamp relating to region locking." You know that Japanese account you made up to download the Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds demo last year? Don't worry, it'll still work even after the PlayStation Store has resurfaced with its flashy new appearance. Many were concerned that with the new interface, Sony would take the opportunity to region lock the Store, thereby restricting everybody to content only available to their specific territory. Of course, this does make some sense, but it's not something we want to see happen, right?

For the most part, this Store revamping won't change how we interact with the content, and that's good news. Even though there will be a significant alteration to the interface (embedded into the PS3 rather than utilizing a web interface), this is mostly a cosmetic update. Remember that, Network buffs.

It would be better if it was one worldwide store with language settings instead...

I've always wanted the 2 atelier games (Elie and Marie) from the Japanese PSN store, but have never ever gotten around to making an account for JP.

Yeah seriously that would be the SMART thing to do...but then again, I dunno all the region b.s. that they have to go through ::shrug:: I do know that I love downloading that RPG that is in the Japanese store, can't remember what its called but they have plenty of expansions for it I believe.

A unified store is the best solution to kill the 'regional disparity' that is always felt. Japan gets an awesome update, and then America goes "WHY DON'T WE GET IT AS WELL". When they do, the UK/EU does the exact same thing and complains as well.

It's a vicious cycle that creates animosity between all regions even though we all share the common will that the PSN is great and wonderful.

Also, on Sony's side, it would be easier because they can just basically update it once instead several times because of regions.

Poo. I thought this meant I could buy JP games with a US card. I still can't :-(

There will never be a unified store because of license/legal issues with alot of games. Its been said multiple times on the PS Blog, just look for the "red official response" in the New Store or Store Update blogs.

That's one of the reasons we dont see alot of games that are in the japan store.
