Sega Confirms Sonic Unleashed
We've been hearing rumors for the past few weeks, but Sega has finally come forward and confirmed it: a brand new Sonic title, Sonic Unleashed, is headed to the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Wii. A horde of leaked images hit the Internet last week, but Sega quickly yanked them down; we'll probably see official media very soon.
Now, as we all know, the last next-gen installment fell way short of expectations (it was actually one of the worst games of the year, in our opinion), so we're hoping this new effort is far superior. So far, we've heard some good news: Unleashed is going to be built using the new "Hedgehog Engine," which allows the developers to introduce "seamless 3D to classic 2D camera transitions, with multiple paths through a familiar Sonic world." (source- CVG) But perhaps the most interesting part of this announcement is that Sega has evidently been working on this title for three years. ...really?
"By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love," said Sega's Gary Knight. "In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic."
Knight is apparently talking about the fresh "night and day" gameplay mechanic that...well, we don't really know what it is, exactly. But anything new will probably be good for this ailing franchise, and we hope the results are, at the very least, satisfactory. Dare we hope for impressive...? Above all else, we want this video game icon to reclaim its former glory.
