Epic Talks Unreal Engine IV...Sort Of
Some time ago, Epic stated that the newest Unreal Engine would likely debut for next-generation consoles initially, before taking shape on for the PC market. Mark Rein, the head honcho of Epic Games, issued a statement to Eurogamer explaining what exactly is the status of Unreal Engine IV.  "It's just a research project today," Mark Rein, boss of Epic, told Eurogamer. "Our plan is that it will be aimed at the next generation so it is many years away." Now, with that said, that means we shouldn't expect the fourth-generation engine to come to fruition for another 4-5 years, or so, and that's just predicting when developers will get their hands on it.
Currently, Unreal Engine III powers an enormous a vast majority of today's available first person shooters, as well as a plethora of other genres. With this dominance in the current generation, it'd be interesting to see if Epic can continue their momentum into the next wave of consoles. Remember, last generation was dominated by Criterion's Renderware engine, which pushed Grand Theft Auto and Burnout. But Criterion couldn't replicate that success, as Epic took over with Unreal Engine.
