Home Delayed, Closed Beta Expanding, Open Beta for Fall

What is essentially a delay announcement, Sony has issued information regarding Home. While not entirely disappointing, it basically confirms that Home will not be ready for public use until early 2009. The good news from all of this is that Sony will be expanding the ongoing closed-beta for Home this Summer 2008, by allowing more registrants to enter. The other good news is that their will be a public beta made available this Fall 2008. We expect the public beta to allow a large amount of people to partake, probably more than the Metal Gear Online beta that's about to begin.

"We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today," said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PLAYSTATION Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation(R) tradition."

Home continues to be one of the PlayStation 3's most ambitious projects in development and has already suffered numerous delays. Coincidentally, LittleBigPlanet, the game revealed side-by-side with Home, has also suffered the same amount of delays. Let's hope that the open beta of Home is large enough to get a whole bunch of us in.

It's really annoying though, when i read this this morning i was very very angry. There should only be adverts for products when they are nearing the end of production.. For example, don't do television ads and give out posters about something that isn't ready for another year or so. It's been delayed so many times im not interested anymore, but thats just me i guess...

This is horrible. Really. Exactly what Legion said: Sony was being so shady by advertising it on their TV spots right next to Haze and Metal Gear Solid 4 - which aren't even out yet - and those spots were running like 2-3 months ago. This is going to hurt Sony so much, a lot of people are going to get sick of defending the PS3 with news like this.

Oh for christ sake! I spend loads of time arguing against people claiming XBOX 360 is better than PS3 and this is how Sony repay us. I think Sony should step up and regain the quality assurance it once had. Release date: late '07 is pretty much the same as early '09 for Sony.

Like I said, there is still a decent amount of hope that many of us will have a version of Home running in our PS3s this fall. Open betas are generally enormous, often allowing for tens of thousands to join. I recall the FFXI Online Beta having 50,000-75,000k people, which was a lot.

Whilst that is true, it's been so long and so dragged out that it's become an issue about what we should and shouldn't be told, and what should and shouldn't be advertised, rather than the actual release date of Home.

Last time i checked, adverts were for products that are for sale, or are so in the NEAR future and is a definate thing. Not for things that will come out a year from then and are still in production.. Im know im ranting, but with good reason i feel.

Alright guys, First off... Id like to say Hello, This is infact my first time posting... Id like to point out 2 major issues with your blacklashes towards Sony... 1) This is a free service... Sony has to do Jack S**t for us. We should be thanking Sony for their attempt towards making the Playstation Network a more fun and innovating experiance for everyone. And 2) Most of you here would rather have a blood bathed steak thrown at your face by Sony rather than a full cooked juicy steak handed to you. In short, Stop b****ing because Sony dosnt have to do this at all, and start thanking Sony because theyre working towards one of the best Online Gaming Experiances anyone is going to have.

What is the whole point of complaining about Home while if out now it would be a flawed online experience which Sony don't want.

Its a free service but also Sony's answer to live and if this is for early 2009, then it shows how far behind Live Sony are. Microsoft haven't stopped upgrading their Live service and that's what Sony is trying to compete with. By early 2009, Live will have even more features and Sony will keep playing catch-up due to their slow progress.

I mean when will we start seeing trophies for our acheivments? at this moment of time I'll just take a gamerscore.
How many 3rd party publishers are ready now for this service with their new released or soon to be released games? Is it true that Uncharted has trophies? If so we have to wait a long time before we see them?

Sony doesn't have to offer us PSN or Home for free but Sony does want to compete with Live.
We Sony fans want to see out system do well to be as big as Live and even be superior to Live, I'm sure Sony wants the same. However to for them to do this Sony has to deliver because if they don't and the keep up with these delays, many of us will just lose interest and find something else. Possibly before Home release in early 2009 we're gonna have MGS online and the Agency and anything else I haven't mentioned. I think with the big line-up of single and big online games, there won't be much of a reason to stay in Home.

Home needs to be release soon.

If you want to upgrade your home from an apartment to a condo or house, you have to pay for it. Same applies to a variety of accessories, such as furniture.

Let me make myself more clear.

My problem is not that Home is being delayed at all. It's the advertising and publicity they gave it whilst it was still in production and not even nearly finished. That is what annoys me.

For example: The "hype train" was started by sony when they began advertising Home and sending out leaflets before the game was even finished. THESE are the things that annoy me.

If it were delayed and they hadn't done any of the previous things i mentioned, then thats different. But as they did, i am annoyed.

as I said on the PSU forums... Sony can pay me for my house for waiting so long to get an approved mortgage :P By the time HOME comes out, I won't care about it. It's the one thing they need to release to hold over Mircosoft's head, and you know 360 users are laughing, and some Microsoft PR will probably let people know what they can do on LIVE! while waiting for a Sony product that gets more delays than JFK airport during a hurricane.

It's upseting because they were the ones that were screaming at the top of their lungs about Home! You don't go out of your way to announce something at E3 if it isn't going to come out that same year. The whole presentation was based around Home - going from room to room to show off the PS3's capabilities. Plus they are lying to people who don't know better - by putting Home, Haze, MGS4 and GTP in their TV ads months and months before the games actually release - it's plain lying.

Sony was starting to look like the good-guy of this generation, but now I dunno. They are looking shadier than M$. Okay, I take that back... But still.

@Tatsujin - We don't know that they are creating a great online experience. We really don't. It could flop and be one of the biggest disgraces in videogame history since the 32X. And we know it's free, but it's a feature that Sony talks about when it comes to selling the PS3. It's not like we asked for Home, most people now would just be happy with regular achivements and in-game XMB. And as far as saying that they don't owe us anything - well I think differently. Of course they do, were all extremely loyal Sony customers. Without us, they don't make money. So they better make sure to keep us happy, because if you don't have anyone defending your sytem on the frontlines - then the 360 will come out on top.

I usually don't b*tch about anything being delayed because I have other stuff to do aside from playing games all day - but I just wanted to point out how bad this one looks for Sony.

Sony has also said to pay for Home, they will sell ads to companies to help advertise in the digital world, much like the internet. So to really help out the point, they are being paid for the work they are doing. And being able to buy upgrades for your avitar and your "home" they are getting money, SO you cannot say that it is a free service, because if Wal-Mart wants to advertise on Home, they are taking away from me, the Associate. If McDonalds wants to advertise, it's taking away from the fry-cooks. If a small business looking to expand wants to advertise, oh they send Sony a big fat check to basically scan the business card and post it to a billboard. IT IS NOT A GAME EITHER! It is an online Avitar based chat-room to put it in basic terms. You do not work towards a goal by any means. And I quote from dictionary.reference.com/ "a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators." Home does not require skill or chance. So in no way shape or form is it a "game"...

There's always run ads well before something is released, GT5P was advertised way back at E3 like 2 years ago, as soon as they have something to show they do, because the longer you advertise it the more people will be interested in it. I would prefer sony release the most spectacular product then half ass it. And they are making upgrades to their service, from what i can tell, Live has acomplishments and that's about it, and a store, sony's store is now pretty freakin sweet, that's a big step, not to mention all the features they keep giving us, the 360 doesn't have a handheld that you can control it with over the internet, they don't have free online play, they don't have Blu-Ray, they don't have dvd upscaling, they don't have much in fact, so stop saying it's hard to support sony, it's EASY and if you love Xbox Live so much, GO FUCKING USE IT, instead of ragging on sony's product. but personally, i would rather not pay for something i can get for free from sony. I don't need home to be happy with my PS3 and while it is sad to not be able to see it for a while, I'm more then happy to play my games and play online for free. Home will be great but it's just icing on the 24k gold fucking cake that is the PS3

Well ok...Let ME make my self more clear. Sure the advertisments and w.e help Sony with the money. BUT WE DO NOT PAY SONY A DIME FOR THEIR SERVICE. So, that being said... Sony can pretty much say Alright guys, F**k you, where disableing the PSN. Because the PSN isn't bought along witht he PS3 system, sure the internet port is, but the PSN has nothing to do with it. So if sony wants they can take the PSN the Home and everything else that has PSN on it with them. You should be happy theyre doing this. And ok, yea Sony did release advertisments early... BUT THEY DELAYED HOME BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM BETA TESTERS. How did they know they where gonna delay it? Sure they figured they where gonna delay it maybe a month, maybe 2 but based on FEEDBACK it was delayed longer than expected. Once agian, SONY DOSNT HAVE TO DO ANY OF THIS. Be gratefull you get all this for free, X360 have to pay for their Live and yet they dont get the massive firmwear updates we get, or Home that we will be getting. Stop giving Sony s**t cuz believe it or not, they can stuff it right back up your ass if they ever decide to cancel PSN or Home. You never paid for any of it. You only paid for the system and thats it...

Okay i can't be bothered to read that all the way through but i get the gist lol use paragraphs please.

Basically i do not care that it's delayed. I just think you shouldn't shout about something that wasn't anywhere close to an end product. At the time they were ranting and raving and doing adverts for television, they weren't anywhere near finished.

Also Sony need Home more than we do. They are making it to catch up with the other consoles on many levels. You're wrong in saying that they can just pull the plug on it because it's vital to the console battle.

As you said: "SONY DOESNT HAVE TO DO ANY OF THIS." But they do it because they are playing catch up. If you think they do it for us then you are seriously misguided in your judgement.

You make a great point. But lets not forget... Sony is trying to hand us a cought-up fully functional, one that can turn Live into Dead within a matter of days, to our consoles. Sure, Home is taking long.. but If you ask me I rather have the best out of the realese, and speaking of catch-up... If they release it now, they will have to play catch-up with Live to where as if they take their sweet time we have something that is stronger, better, and sexier than Live is. Wouldn't you say?

@Tatsujin - I think I speak for myself and LegioN when I say that we completely understand where you're coming from. What we have problems with is Sony advertising something to make it seem like it's already out - or on the verge of being released.

I understand how betas work, and I'm glad they aren't releasing a half-a** product. But just like Sony has the policy of keeping their mouth shut on a lot of things, until they wanna say it, they should learn to do it in situations like this as well.

You simply can't advertise something for the PS3 that is nowhere to be found. The Home commercials have been out since like November of 2007. If it doesn't come until early 2009 - that makes more than a year late since they advertised it. As much as I dislike M$, that's not fair for the consumers or for the competition.

It's like if the 360 had a commercial running showing off Gears of War 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Fable 2 and GTA4 downloadable content. You would think to yourself: What a lie!!! Those games aren't even close to being released.

The Home situation is like this, but worse. Please don't take this as b*tching. To tell you the truth, I have never cared about Home. If it works, it works - it will just be a plus. It's just that Sony is starting to get the reputation of hyping up their products way too much and then not delivering.

Just like the Killzone 2 and Motorstorm videos they realeased. Claiming that they were real-time videos, then people find out that they weren't - and that the Killzone 2 screens were re-touched.

Tatsujin im with you. My concern is just everything they did before they delayed it.

If it doesn't work i don't expect them to distribute it to us, they can continue to fix it.

Stick to developing it rather than advertising it and developing it before it's in it's final stages because that, is a bad a idea as things always go wrong and/or take longer than expected.

Key example: GTA:IV went gold last week? GTA:IV adverts have started popping up on my TV this week.

Hey I understand what your saying, but once agian... when Sony released the commercials, they wernt expecting such major delays, I mean yes they where expcecting small delays once or twice, but due to the feedback Sony has no choice but to fix/add/and remove some things within Home, and theyve been getting A LOT of feedback, They do afterall want to compete/beast Live.

@karneli - Like Haze? Nah. Free Radical/Ubisoft will port Haze in the blink of an eye if it doesn't do well on the PS3. They are banking on the fact that it is the only game to have online co-op on the PS3. It would have been just another FPS on the 360.

Ubisoft has hinted at porting it to the 360 so many times. But they are really good at covering all bases. They say enough to keep Sony fans thinking that they will never port it to the 360 - but not enough to say that it can't be made on the 360. Claiming that it pushes the system. But not praising it enough that 360 owners will say "f*ck Free Radical, they chose Sony" in case they decide to port it.

But that's a whole nother story. I hope it gets great reviews.

You guys need to understand that what Sony is doing with Home has never been done before.Its a free service as well and for Sony Its quailty that they are wanting.Home WILL blow Live out of the water.My only real concern is that Sony does not do rentals like how microsoft has theirs set up.You only keep it for 24hrs the moment you hit play.Sony update their store and firmware more often then the paid service of Live.You guys that are complaining about Sony really need to back off.You figure(if you are like me) after playing vid games for over 20 years you'd learn patience.BTW Nice layout guys!

I agree somewhat. And once GTA:IV comes out and MGS4 does too, people will relax alot more.

It's easy to understand everyones frustration. Besides, no real big games have hit the PS3 since CoD4. Whilst there was GT5p. It's not giving the same kind of buzz as call of duty gave to the PSN.

Do you guys also agree that Home really needs to be something truly special to be successful? With all these delays - they are really gonna have to nail it down when it does get released.

Maybe they should try to add a couple more features to the PSN to keep people happy until Home releases. Once again though - I'm completely happy with the PS3 - it's just that I know what the perception of the PS3's online capabilities is, and I'm tired of Xbots going on word of mouth of how behind the PSN is compared to Live.

I am pissed that Sony has once again delayed the awesome-ness that is Home, not a game... Home. But on the other hand, it is still in it's crude state and it was never officially announced after the other delay. As some might actually remember, "The List" was never confirmed or denyed by Sony themselves and they never said,"Damn, this looks like it is gonna be kick-ass, lets say it will come out on this day then to piss everyone off, lets make it come out a little over a year later." Lets lay off Sony for a bit, cause they have enough on their plates as far as Microsoft wanting to use the Blu-Ray player and Home and getting the gunmetal grey PS3 out with a DS3 and all. Also, they are constantly working on the Store for us so we have new shit every week on Thursdays. Oh plus the updates that they have tried to get out almost every other month. So, LETS LAY THE F**K OFF. NO ONE CARES ANYMORE, WE HAVE TO WAIT... No way arround that. If we bitch enough Sony is liable to say screw everyone who has ever doubted this, you guys shouldn't get it when it finally comes out...
