Jack Tretton: Launching PS3 One of Toughest Career Moments

  In a recent interview with MCV-UK, Jack Tretton, President of SCEA, spoke about the launch of the PlayStation 3 as being one of the toughest moments of his career. Tretton stated that all of the negative press from the media, felt like the weight of the world was on Sony's shoulders. As many of you should recall, much of that pessimism was due to the PlayStation 3's launch price of $499 and $599.

   "There was a lot of concern about the technology promise of the PS3 as well as the price point. Consumers questioned whether Sony would be able to deliver on that promise. The first year was certainly a baptism of fire."

   "Previously, I managed just a portion of the business. Now, I’m responsible for all of it, so I feel a tremendous amount of of responsibility for virtually everything the company does. I would like to show long-term growth and success at the most senior levels."

   As of late, the PlayStation 3 has been enjoying satisfactory sales in both the Americas, and especially Europe. Its line-up of games is garnering incredible attention, and many analysts have upgraded their prospects of the console considerably. Overall, things continue to look good for Sony.

One thing I've always wondered is why is Sony so slow at pushing out first-party games for their own consoles, it was pretty slow for the PS2 but for the PS3 its really bad. If you look at Nintendo, they churn out first-party games like its butter or something. It's because first party games show the power of the console that is important, Jack. Sure, first-party games if made well will help put out consoles but it also gives a guideline and benchmark third-party developers to shoot for. It's as if you built the thing and don't even know its own potentials and limits except for what is on paper.

Protip, Jack: INVEST more into things like the next Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Gran Turismo, SingStar, etc. Tried, tests and very well made franchises that will not only help your PS2 fanbase move on to the PS3 but to bring back some of others that were lost to the other 2 consoles.

You should look back the catalog of 1st party games so far on the PS3 - there is a TON of them. Warhawk, Uncharted, Ratchet, GT5Prologue, Folklore, MLB 07, MLB 08, Heavenly Sword, Formula One, Resistance, Hot Shots Golf 5, and MotorStorm.

You also forget that Nintendo's 1st party games are essentially the same remade games of the previous prequels. I've seen Mario Kart comparissons from Wii and Cube and they're basically identical in both visuals and game features. Same with this new Super smash Brawl game, few more levels and characters and its a new game?
Nintndo only add to the original versions rather than make a complete new sequel.
And its on a low spec hardware, shouldn't take them to long to develop.

The Playstation 3 is a real Next-Gen system, and not every developer can take one look at the system and say "Yes, I can do this without a sweat... although it is a completely diffrent format." Infact, I never heard of a developer saying they got it hands-down with the Playstation 3 untill maybe the past 4 months. It takes time.

well yes it obviously the ps3's year put i am hoping for more.What about 2009,will it be shit ,if sony are pushing this "year of the ps3" thing will it mean theres nothing for 09........it should be consistence that makes a console great.look at the xbox one good game a year,sony has to blow them away with great ,original consistant titles.

well atleast their will be resi 5 in 09:)

Well now that you put it like that... Look at the Line-up, Firmware updates, PSN updates, and not to mention some Delays that go into 2009... 2008 isnt "the year of the Ps3"... 2008 AND 2009 are :) Possibly 2010 cuz I feel like adding it. :D Theres always something to look for from a PS3, Whether its a firmware update, a game, or some new PSN content... Im always excited to turn on my PS3. :)

I have always liked Jack. He's just a likable guy, you know? But, even though most people say that the launch of the PS3 was poor, I, however, do not think so. Every launch of any console has never been perfect. I think that the PS3 launch was pretty impressive as far as the games. It may have had a short list, but the games that were out, were freaking amazing.
