Grand Theft Auto IV to Sell Better on PS3?

There's just seven days left until the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV, and the frenzy of anticipation is well under way. One question many are asking is: 'which version will sell more'? Some suggest PlayStation 3, because GTA has been historically associated with the PS2, and because Sony has a GTAIV PS3 bundle on the way. While others say the Xbox 360, because of its larger userbase and downloadable content.

Neither gamers nor retailers can agree, as MCV-UK reports conflicting beliefs from various retailers in Europe. "Both titles have generated great interest on the Asda website, with strong pre-orders, and the PS3 version is selling three times that of 360, which is surprising and not in line with what we'd expect," said Asda's head of games Duncan Cross.

Three times as much? That sounds pretty unreal, but it's just one such example. A Debbie O'Neill, a representative for Comet's games division states: "We have great expectations and believe it is going to be a massive hardware driver - especially on PS3." That is not to say that she believes it'll sell best on the PS3, just that it should move more consoles for Sony than Microsoft.

On the other hand, Tim Ellis, an HMV representative, mentions that interest for the Xbox 360 version is higher, thanks to an in-store incentive: "Demand for both formats is high, but our 1,000 Xbox points offer generated a huge amount of interest."

The GTAIV frenzy is so high that GAME, the UK's largest game retailer, cannot promise the fulfillment of pre-orders for launch day. "As expected, there is huge anticipation for GTA IV and we are working closely with Take Two to serve as many customers as possible," said a GAME representative. "Given the demand, we are unable to guarantee customers who order a copy will receive the title on launch day."

With record high pre-orders, you can bet your bottom dollar that GTAIV should end up one of this generation's best selling games, if not the best selling.

Well, GTA is a well known name... and GTA IV is a well developed game which truly pushes both the PS3 and the X360 to their limits, but seeing the PS3 has many great exclusives STILL to come out while X360 has games such as Halo 3 for example, I dont think the X360 users are going to go wild for GTA IV as much as the PS3 users, and lets not forget... This year is Ps3's year.

Neither system has or will be pushed to their limits. If they were, this soon, then a PS4 and a New XBox would be in developement seeings how a simple game that still has glitches has over done it. In no way shape or form has or will either system been or will be pushed to it's limits. PS2 still hasn't been pushed to it's full extent and it's been out since 7 almost 8 years. So yeah, no pushing limits anywhere or anytime soon...

Well then, Your obviously not up to date... MGS4 pushes the PS3 to its limits, Konami even came out and said it, and youve read it probably. Look further down this months news... And the PS2 has been pushed to its limits plenty of times.. It depends if the developer wants the game "At peak point" or just a regular everyear game. Konami already proved it.

Intresting (I'm going to talk about the UK, since I live there and where ASDA and MCV are based) the 360 version could still surprise. There is the nice pre-order points bonus, the DLC, and of course it will still be cheaper then it's PS3 counterpart because retailers love to screw us over.

Of course I'm still getting the PS3 version ;-) going to wait till I can get a copy that won't be £45. At least the MGO Beta can keep me entertained till then

Actually, Retailers hight the value of the game because for what I know and hear, a lot more people own PS3's versus X360's therfore they might just think theyll make more money off of the Ps3 version seeing almost anyone thats anything is going to buy the game. It's all profit.

I own a ps3 so.., all of my friends have 360 but imagine how sad it would be after they pay for the game, pay for the extra DLC and then their console dies....; I'm sure they all would come to my place to see the final missions of GTA

Interesting how the only 1 of the 3 retailers to find the 360 coming out on top is the 1 making a special offer.
Perhaps those that are interested in the 360 version are more likely to order at HMV (due to the offer).

There are many places with 360 GTA4 offers. Some offer 1000 points (worth £10) with goodies and on some sites it can be found for £35 with free delivery, so why would people buy from ASDA @ £38 when the next website is a much better offer. Taking asda's figures as a measuring stick is a bit silly don't you think.

places like Asda and Comet only account for a small percentage of game sales. Where we need to look are at places obviously Game and Gamestation but also Play.com and Amazon. I like to see what the pre-orders for each console are like at these stores. I'm also wondering how many ebay sellers have bought in bulk from these store to re-sell for profit on ebay, as they know that high demand will outstrip supply and they will exploit this.

Amazon.com has the 360 version slightly ahead at 53% to 47%.

GTA was never known for its graphics only its content and by no means does it even push the 360 in that reguard lol...well maybe in DVD disc space.

Well... If you read all the recent news first off, you would see that arguments within Rockstar from Rockstar's own employees emerged whether or not the PS3 version looked better (In terms of graphics)... And for an argument like that to emerge from the games OWN creators is something big...

So with that said, Dan Houser already said that they pushes the PS3 "Close to limits" or something similar to that, and lets not forget that many developers are leaning towards the PS3 when it comes to power.

So, why isn't the X360 being pushed to its limits agian? Exactly, unless you have a good reason why it woldn't, just think about everything that had to be done within the game to get it to "the Golden" stage. Graphics isn't the only thing needed to push a system to it's Limits you know...

I've only ever seen adverts for the 360 version on TV. Play.com have sold out the PS3 preorders but still have 360 orders left.

I guess the install requirement hasn't put people off.

Hes also got a point... The install is so that there will be NO load times at ALL. Just a one time load when you start the game (Like previouse GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas) So you can walk into any building without any loading time. I find this thweeeet

Well that sucks for the UK but I bet you all 20 bucks that I'll probably just be able to go to Wal Mart and go ahead and pick up one of the many copies of the game packing up on the shelve...I'm not "hating" but it's true and it's been hapening ever since I started playing video games...

People pre-order games and a week later there are a lot of copies gathering dust: Halo 3, Unreal Tournament 3, Turok, Call of Duty 4, and now Grand Theft Auto 4...

As i work at said retailer, I can tell you we typically get more 360 copies of the same title than their ps3 counterpart. They also sell out quicker on 360, but that could just be a demographic thing.
