Infinity Ward Wants COD Exclusively, 3rd-person COD Coming?

Word has begun spreading around, originating from Next-Gen.Biz, about Infinity Ward potentially looking to secure exclusive development of the Call of Duty franchise. As many COD fans should know, the games were originally spearheaded by the gang at Infinity Ward, as the first two games were developed by the team. Following COD2, Treyarch took the responsibilities of COD3, in addition to a few spin-offs, while Infinity Ward began work on Call of Duty 4.

Well, after enormous critical acclaim, absurdly huge sales, and a welcomed breath of fresh air, Activision had decided to let Treyarch work on Call of Duty 5. Moreover, they'll be taking the series back to the beaten-deader-than-a-dead-horse World War II scenario. This decision has been met with a lot of anger, seeing as how COD3 is widely regarded to be the worst of the series, and Treyarch was behind it.

Now that you've been caught up with the drama, let's get back to the topic at hand. This rumor of I.W. attempting to secure exclusivity allegedly comes from a former Activision employee, someone from the recently closed Foster City/Underground studio. Why could this have credence? Well, apparently, the reason why Activision had shut down their Underground Studio (formerly Z-Axis), is because after they finished Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for the PS3, they were supposed to work on a third-person Call of Duty spin-off.

So why aren't they? The reason why Activision has axed the studio is because Infinity Ward may have very well gotten their wish at working on COD games exclusively, leaving the Underground Studio with no project to work on, and thus no point to remain in operation. And that, kids, is just how the cookie, has potentially crumbled.

I guess it's worth re-noting that there's a third-person Call of Duty somewhere development, and that Activision plans to release two Call of Duty branded games every year. Hmmm...I'm reminded of another franchise that does the same thing, you may know it as Tom Clancy.

Dillon: As long as it's just a spin-off, I'm okay with it. But diluting a brand with so many releases eventually wears thin.

I agree with Arnold, WWII games are old news, but i think as long as the game grabs the gamers attention, whether thats the multiplayer or something else, then i dont care what the hell it is

But if Activision does what they've done to The guitar hero series then screw that..

I suppose thats why IW is keeping it to themselves, they dont wanna ruin COD's good name now that their popular with modern warfare

I dont get it, 3rd person = FAILURE...
WWII = FAILURE !...
They wanna revisit history thats cool, by all means but make it interesting, do Vietnam or another past but closer in time than WWII. at least that way its history but also more modern combat..Bah...developers these days.

But lets not forget... If it is done with Modern Combat... How diffrent will it be from CoD 4? I think I.W. Should grab the series and work hard on it, to make it a much more diffrent experiance, and then hopefully not release it till 2009 or 2010, I don't like the same game installments being released one after another just like that you know?

if infinity arent spearheading COD5. then i wont be bothering to look at it.

COD4 was the first one i have played, and i love the game. although single player AI could have done with a few tweaks.

we are living in modern times, maybe its about time all those WW FPS devs realise that and embrace it.

something about chasing down terrorist and trying to divert a possible nuclear disastor, is alot more appealing to me, then simply running around killing a few natzi's.

no more story to it.

UPDATE : Activision fired off a strongly worded denial to Next Generation, saying the info reported is "erroneous information regarding the CoD franchise."

Im not buying CoD5 for the same reasons as everyone else. It's been done so many times it's financial murder to go back to it. Everyone has had their fill with WWII, maybe the sales or lack of sales that CoD5 will make will get this through to Treyarch.

Question is, why are they ignoring everyone and going ahead wit it? Stubborn is how they're coming across.

Meanwhile EA likes to MAKE money, I guess Activision is the opposite so they decided on Treyarch for CoD5..."CoD4 sold very very well...more than we expected...because of that...we decided we should go with a less successful approach I mean we don't need the money pashaw, all in favor?"

You know man, I read something VERY VERY similare to this that came out from tryanch and thought the SAME exact thing. Yea, so CoD 4 does good, why would you go back to WWII, something that didn't do so well... Do they think of this stuff? Who the hell is working there jeez

Hey, IDEA! Ditch the WWII theme and go with modern warfare, the planed story for the first one that some d-bags decided to ditch... oh they did that... why not make it from the good guys perspective? Oh, they did that too... WHY NOT PLAY ON THE MODERN IDEA... add features like actually driving the vehicles or add more explosion to it. Make it where you can choose sides, customize your person, customize your weapon for the story. Why not actually add clan challenges to your online play? Give us what we want or your sales are gonna sink, much like the whole WWII/Old War idea. Old sucks. New is, well new, and cool. Obviously...
