GTAIV: Costliest Game To Make In History

As you all know, Grand Theft Auto IV comes out this week. If for some bizarre reason you didn't know, you're simply lost...this is a gaming website, chief. Everybody in the game world knows GTAIV drops on the 29th.

Anyway, the game will certainly be the biggest release of 2008, and according to a recent article at the UK's TimesOnline, it may also be the most expensive game to make in the industry's history. Leslie Benzies, one of the leading producers for GTAIV, estimates that the total cost to create GTAIV sits at the astounding $100 million mark. Yep, that's right- "It's like making a theatre production, a few movies and an album all to fit into one package," he said. While he can't put an exact price tag on the production, he believes that $100m mark isn't far off; over 1,000 people had a part in developing the blockbuster, after all. But even if it is accurate, don't worry about Rockstar. Analysts expect the game to rake in over $400 million in the first week of sales alone.

Grand Theft Auto IV is bound to be a phenomenon, and it probably comes as no surprise that it costs a mountain of cash to develop and produce. But $100 million? That's just insane. Let's hope it's all worth it in the end!

Hell ya.. that's awesome! They managed to wrangle $200 bucks outta me alone..lol. I bought 2 of the Ps3 Special Editions of Gta 4. 1 to open and play with.. and 1 to sit on my shelf and drool over. (I'm a hardcore collector.) At this exact moment in time.. with about 25 hours until the midnight launch, Best Buy.com, Circut City.com, Wal-Mart.com, Target.com, EB games.com, Gamestop.com.. all all completely sold out of pre-orders. I have yet to check Amazon.. but you know the retards of ebay will be hitting this one like a rat hitting the feeder bar, so if you dont have this on the way to your house.. you better either be scanning the net for a loose SE set, getting your ass in a line somewhere, or saving up your wooden nickels.. for the ebay tards. I pre-ordered my first set in Feb. at Best-buy and they are sending me a free limited edition poster. The second pre-order I placed was last week at Wal-Mart.com.. and they are sending me a free GTA 4 t-shirt. Anyway.. the very best of luck to everyone.. and I hope you find you a copy to own. Cause this is probably gonna be the absolute largest video game launch in history. (Until FFXIII of course.) And please be civil out there.. dont be robbing folks, or beating up people for it.. like the horrific Halo 3 launch.

Peace and Good Luck.

You won't have to worry about any shortages if you pre-ordered the Special Edition :P They are limited to each store... Ex. If a store had 200 coming in stock, it could only sell 200, to where as the regulare buy is unlimited as they get shipments from date x to date y. SE is only a one-time shipment I believe, if ive been reading all the GTA IV news correctly.

If you want to order GTA there is still time go to either of these stores: http://www.newegg.com/ or http://www.tigerdirect.com/
I hope GTAIV make enoug money so that Take Two dont have to sell there company to EA. Besides we all know there is a high percentage chance that gta might just make 800 or maybe a Bill in the first week....lets hope

I myself am not a hard core gamer. I say that first so i don't get flamed to badly. But im going to Quote the story here

"the game will certainly be the biggest release of 2008"

Does anyone else thing this is a bit premature to be calling this game the biggest release of all of 2008?

i don't know about you but Starcraft 2 has millions of followers more than GTA:IV

Blizzard Is doing a launch of it Simultaneously around the world much like GTA:IV. i believe if i am not mistaken but is anyone out there thinking that something like Starcraft 2 might surpass GTA:IV in sales the first day or week?

Just my 2 Cents

(Please don't flame to to badly)

No offense, but Starcraft 2 doesn't have "millions of followers more." I'm not even sure where you got that number from... There's not a chance in hell that game will sell what GTAIV will sell, and that's not really an opinion.

I wouldn't say it unless it's basically a foregone conclusion. I don't believe in exaggeration. But GTAIV is and will be the biggest release of this year, as most industry journalists will also say.

I have to agree. Starcraft will do some good numbers but I dont think it will be anywhere near GTA's numbers.

Ben does state a good point, although Blizzard has a nice user database and some very fantastic games, Star Craft would, even if Great Zues himself came down here and said otherwise, never top GTA IV's hype. IV sure did take a major step-up from San Andreas, I dont see how anything would bother to go agianst IV at this point.

We'll soon see if this is worth the cost. Although, now I'm worried about this may becoming a big disaster.
By the way, I can't seem to find the word "costliest" in the OED. lol

WOW - now I feel guilty if I don't buy it LOL
That's a lot of money - no wonder they were firmly against the EA buyout!

Wow.. good eye Damaine, I would have never thought about Newegg.com.
Secolliyn, I can guarentee you.. that GTA4 will in fact be the biggest release this year. And it's all about one thing.. Mass appeal. Sure other games like FFXIII, Haze and others will have great numbers and will have awesome launches.. But, GTA4 is one of those games that EVERYONE wants to play. Although im in that group of people that hold up RPG's above all other games.. RPG's are an aquired taste and not exactly made for the masses. Same for FPS's and strategy games. But the GTA series has always had that "something for everybody" thing going. Driving, shooting, collecting stuff, stealing cars, mini-games, and much, much more. Everybody seems to love a "dark-hero" type.
Raz is right.. costliest is not a word.
And finally.. Welcome back Ben.. its good to see ya back. I always enjoy reading your stuff. And the new look is much more easy on the eyes.

Oh yea it's all going to be worth it in the long run. Just think about it to profit out of movies you need to be able to sell tickets, make DVDs, and then rent them out. Well video games work a lot better:

Games-$50-$60 DVDs-$20-$25
Collector's-$70-80 Collector's-$25-$30
Rent-$10 Rent-$5

I don't know about you all but it makes sense to me...
