Early GTAIV Reviews Almost Perfect

We've all been waiting with bated breath for Grand Theft Auto IV, and now that it's finally here, we're starting to see the first sets of reviews. Typically, a game with so much hype and build-up has difficulty meeting expectations, simply because those expectations are through the roof. But this is one of those very rare instances where the game in question seems to have met and even exceeded the highest expectations of industry journalists.

If for whatever strange reason you haven't picked up GTAIV yet, we point you in the direction of GameRankings to check out the average scores so far. The results have been absolutely astounding: the PS3 version is averaging 99.7% (the 360 version is almost identical at 99.8%) with perfect 10s from a few of the largest gaming publications out there. This includes both GameSpot and IGN, which - if you are familiar with the review styles of those sites - seems almost incomprehensible. Other perfect 10s of interest include reviews from Game Informer, GameSpy, VideoGamer, G4/XPlay, and 1Up/EGM. The only sub-perfect scores for GTAIV thus far come from Play UK (9.8 out of 10) and Cheat Code Central (4.9 out of 5). Certain top-notch titles in the past, like God of War II and Gears of War, have warranted super high scores, but this is unprecedented.

Obviously, this is a must-have game. But of course, we know what you're all wondering- what will PSX Extreme give GTAIV? Ah, but you mustn't fret, dear readers; that result isn't far off. We continue to dig our way through this game and we refuse to give anything away beforehand...

...well, here's food for thought-

In 8 years of reviewing games, I have never once awarded a perfect score. Take that as you will. ;)

Whilst it may be that good, I think that there is alot of euphoric over reaction. In time players will find quirks with it, no title can be perfect, near perfect maybe, but not perfect. Rockstar, in all sense and purposes, could (and maybe will) release one or two patches along the way. This could erradicate those quirks, such as flickering shadows and the recent crashing issues reported. It will take a little while to see what comes of it, but no doubt, it will set records. I feel that GTAIV begins to give people an idea of what an "interactive film" could be like. I guess gameplay/choice mechanics can still be refined, but no doubts here, if we look at hardware developments for the future... The GTA series (and games of similar types) may well begin to merge the film/game genres radically.

Q!

I think we've already had interactive films before. Maybe none like the magnitude of GTA IV, but we've had them. But I, like the other rabid readers of this site, am dying to see the review. Regardless of what score is given, I'll still get the game.

I agree with Ben, I dont believe a game can ever be perfect so a perfect score from me would be nigh impossible

This game isn't worth a 10/10. 9/10 maybe but not a 10. There is glitches, slowdown and the camera need a little work. What i'm trying to say is that the game isn't perfect so i doesn't deserve perfect scores.

"There's an Italian painter, named Carlotti, and he uh, ahem, defined beauty. He said it was the summation of the parts working together in such a way that nothing needed to be added, taken away or altered. Perfect..."
This game is the best i have played yet. It's perfect from what i see. If anything was added, taken away or altered, it would lose some of that magic. It's quirks are not faults to me, they are it's character. In a woman i would call such quirks cute or adorable.
Plus, it's great help for me learning Russian. ;)

Anybody know why the xbox version got 99.8% and ps3 got 99.7%?
why is the ps3 version worse (if barely)? is it the crashing?

also, i've been waiting for amazon to finally send it, and it's driving me nuts. us mail still hasn't picked it up since sunday. anybody else with that frustration?

Haven't played it - but they did say over 1000 staff members worked on it... so hopefully that says something

I would never rate a game 10/10 though... but it's nice to see a game rated so high in a while

A 10 in graphics... come on, got to be kidding me.

If it is a super fun game doesn't mean the graphics are perfect...

I've seen better game graphics with a lower graphics score cough uncharted cough

To much hype.

Hi all, GTA's been great for me so far and the stellar reviews are well deserved. However, I'm stuck! After just 3 missions with Roman, ending with one where i dropped him off at the depot after killing damiel or smth like that, I then proceeded to start on a mission "first date" where I have gone out with michelle on many dates and have been laid etc. However since then, Roman does not call me anymore for more missions, but just mere outings now, and I dont know how to continue with the missions. I have started a new game and am stuck at the same spot yet again. Anyone with any advice on how to resume missions with Roman?

I haven't experienced the whole game in its entirety but I can say that I didn't experience the freezing issue atleast, I can't say if I'd believe all those reviews I mean...come on, isn't IGN the people that fired someone just cuz they gave an HONEST review of a game being advertised on their website? From what I've seen, alot of game sites have ads of GTA on their so I can't believe them completely...never will.

yes i've only got 2 contacts, roman and michelle.. there are options for both such as call and bring them out for activities (drink, eat etc), however each time i try to 'call' roman i get his voicemail, and i can ask both out for activities but still nothing related to new missions seem to be initiated

woohoo! i've got the problem rectified by reinstalling. I believe the problem of mission markers not appearing might have been due to the freezing issue while i was trying out the multiplayer mode, and had to switch off my ps3 from its power source, affecting the game data in some way. the game is blowing me away right now!
