Rockstar "Feels Terrible" About GTAIV Lock-Up Issue
At first, it was believed that the freezing issues of Grand Theft Auto IV were only affecting the PS3, but reports now say that both the 360 and PS3 versions may have lock-up issues.
It's difficult to pin down, but it seems that the majority of these problems tend to crop up during the opening cut-scene of the game or when trying to enter and exit the multiplayer mode. Some users have reported catastrophic failures, in that the game actually ruined their console entirely. Rockstar quickly acknowledged the issue and suggested that PS3 users uninstall the game data and reinstall, but that - and no other user fix - seems to work. A Rockstar rep has made a very candid response to this situation (source- Kotaku): "I feel terrible about this," and said the company is attempting to come up with a solid fix. He doesn't know when this will happen, though, so here's hoping the freezing issue isn't too widespread. It'd be a crime if not enough people got to experience this one.
So if you do have a GTAIV lock-up issue, just try to be patient. If you can, return it for another copy and try that. We'll keep you updated.

In the past I have been burned by purchases I made due to marketing hype and not taking the time to research enough by reading industry reaction to a title, player reviews and the like. In the last 10 years, and particularly in the last 5 years, the internet has leveled the playing field, supplying me with information I need to make the most informed purchasing decision I can. With GTA, as with other titles past and future, marketing hype is one thing, reality is another. This does not mean at all that these games are 'bad', I am merely pointing out that it may be worth sitting back and watching for a while before rushing into anything, and that goes for most things in life.
