Obama Talks GTAIV...Intelligently

Everyone wants a piece of Grand Theft Auto IV these days. And while we normally don't talk politics on this site - it's just so freakin' boring - this is something that's worth mentioning.

Leading Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama talked about GTAIV in a speech yesterday, and for once, it wasn't a Thompson-esque rant about how video games are killing our children. It was was a calm, steady, relatively informed set of statements that actually surprised us. For the first time, we saw a politician admit a game was designed specifically for adults - which GTAIV is, of course - and didn't immediately assume that games in general were evil. However, Obama did say he believed that kids would still get their hands on Rockstar's blockbuster (and he's right), and that games and entertainment are "raising our kids." (source, MCVUK, GamePolitics)

"I was just catching the news this morning about Grand Theft Auto, this video game, which is gonna break all records and make goo-gobs of money for whoever designed it. Now, this isn't intended for kids, although I promise you there are kids who are playing it, but these video games are raising our kids... Across the board, middle-class, upper-class, working-class kids, they're spending a huge amount of their time not on their studies, but on entertainment."

And so part of our job is going to have to be to inspire the entire country to say, 'How are we giving our kids a thirst for knowledge?' And turning off the TV set, and getting them to be engaged and interested, like their future really does matter on how well they do in school."

We're not promoting Obama and we're not saying everything he says is 100% accurate (far from it), but we have to agree completely with everything in those quotes. ...since when do gamers agree with politicians? What's the world coming to?

Obama has always struck me as someone who really does understand. Unlike the other politicians, who just think they understand.

Obama is making a grave error believing that the majority of adults are not children. Personally I have seen a number of examples where adults in public have lost their cool and behaved like immature children. The problem is, some of these adults can become extremely violent too. One never knows the true extent of how media influences people psychologically, across the age range!

but imo, Obama is not talking about the adults. Hes talking about the children and getting them to enhance their pallets for life. Too much of anything is bad. I knew games would take away from my studies so as a kid I only played them on weekends and during the summer. It was the duty of my parents to build morality and will-power into their children. Its not the fault of the media if violence is imitated. This point is reinforced if adults are doing it because they should have learned by the age of 18 (the legal age) what is wrong and right.

Yip, true what you say, however the question of responsibility can be misleading. Psychological degeneration can occur at any age, depends on life circumstance, sometimes not in ones control. Can games then have the power to influence people negatively. Just look at youth crime in Britain today compared to 30 years ago, the statistics or not good.

But if games are going to upheld to lime-light then we should do the same for movies, TV, radio, and news. I find the latter tends to exaggerate a story at times even if the it was not there. Then, the media tends to glorify events. Oh, and I do agreed that psy. degen. can happen at any age. But I wonder why it is more common now days? The problem can be at the root of this phenomenon.

Infekt, broadly the pressures of life in general, for the middle classes it can wreck havoc when trying to parent, resulting in a large swathe of kids who feel neglected, and immerse themselves into worlds that don't always react well with unsettled minds. Whether child or adult, if the right triggers are pushed mayhem is unleashed, sometimes resulting into violent consequences. The point and question being, how does todays media, whether film or game, affect young and old minds alike? It must be said, that if a mind cannot cope with certain themes it could trigger a negative reaction in a particular type of person?

Then as a society, have we lost our purpose of being. If you are going to be a parent, you need to give it 110%. You owe it to your kids and society. A lot of ppl don't take ownership of their own problems and are quick to point the finger elsewhere. Work pressure are growing because of competition. I agree that a little competition is good, but we are headed towards 12 hour work days (and I'm guilty of that too). That and spousal troubles are probably the most damaging while talking about bringing us to brink of havoc. But there are remedies. If one looks for help it can be found. The effort is what ppl lack. Talking about triggers being pushed in persons of all ages; this has been happening from the beginning of civilization. This, imo, this is nothing new. And I agree that different stimuli can affect ppl differently. But this is still a subject being studied. There is no concrete evident as of yet.

I read the large amount of comments above and it was interesting. But you see, your making it more complicated then it has to be.It just comes down to this.Human beings are imperfect. We have been since Adam and Eve sinned. And whether we like it or not, we can be influenced over time no matter what are age.The more you feed your mind with garbage, the more your mind becomes garbage. For younger ones it can happen easier and takes less time. For older ones it can happen still, but it certain instances it takes longer to manipulate their minds. No matter what age, there is no immunity to it.This is an imperfect world and it's gonna get worse as we go.Men cannot make it perfect.Imperfection cannot make perfection.Thats a fact.

Alright, you sounded like a poet but dude, Your 100% wrong, thats a FACT.

It all depends on the beings chemistry, and what they like/dislike, rather have/not have and things of that nature. Therefor, saying that games can addict anyone at any age with any personality is a complete lie. I play video games 24/7, I still manage to carry a very healthy social life, I still manage to go to work on time, anytime at any day, and I still manage to pass my classes (Although I really do hate school, but society forces a lot of things on us =/)

So, video games to me are a big part of my life, but do they affect me completely? Absalutly not. I don't ever recall thinking to myself "My god, Niko looks so cool, I want to go out and run people over like he does"

It's all a matter of chemistry within a being.

What you wrote about is just flat-out bullshit that makes somewhat no sense as far as I am concerend.

Thanks for wasting my 5 minutes of peace with your "garbage" cented post.

P.S., Your the one thats making it more complicated than it has to be. Stop it will you! :P

I think that what parents say when they sue Rockstar or anyother video game production company is just a excuse for the following reasons;

1) Rockstar isn't your god damn childs parent. You are, and if you don't like it, don't have kids. It is not Rockstars responsiblity to teach your child how to shit, and whats right from wrong, it is your responsiblity (Parent)

2) There is no such excuse as "Parents are too busy these days." Because if your telling me that your way too busy to watch what your child is playing, or look on the back of the mother fucking video game case for the ESRB rating, then you have some seriouse problems, see a god damn physiatrist.

3) If you think all video games are violent and teach your kids wrong instead of right, just jump off a cliff right now before I throw you off, Video games increase the human thought process by X amount of % (Depending on how much they play) through-out the human average life-spam.

How you may ask? Look at World of Warcraft for example. The quests that you take require thought, and the more the brain thinks for some period of time the more it developes on problem/real life statistics and solving.

Those are a few reasons that if your a parent and go around telling people how bad video games are and how bad they are to your kids, then your just, flat-out, plain and simple, no excuses whatsoever... Retarded and full of shit. Sorry for the long write, It's GTA IV time now.
