GTAIV Enshrined By Guinness
Take-Two Interactive has already confirmed that Grand Theft Auto IV is a huge seller - 3.6 million copies on launch day; 6 million sold during the first week, and $500 million in total sales revenue - but now, the records are completely official.
The Guinness World Records committee has revealed that GTAIV has set new records for the following categories: Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours. That first day number of 3.6 million units and $310 million in cash easily topped the previous record holder in the video game world; last year's Halo 3. Bungie's blockbuster sold $170 million in the first 24 hours and in the movie realm, "Spider-Man 3" hit $60 million last May. Perhaps the closest competitor to GTAIV was J.K. Rowling's immensely popular final installment in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows," which hit $220 million in first-day sales.
so there you have it. Grand Theft Auto IV sold like no other entertainment property during the first day of its existence, and that's just plain amazing. Guinness should probably pay close attention to this industry in the near future, too...it's going nowhere but up.
