NPD April 08 System Sales: PS3 & X360 Flop, Nintendo Wins Big

If there was ever a time where I would call something an epic disaster, this would be it. Analysts have long predicted April 2008 hardware sales to be incredible, considering the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV. Well, it looks like analysts, such as Michael Pachter, were wrong again. Dead wrong, in fact. So wrong, that it's painful. But the epic disaster isn't how off the predictions were, it's how bad the sales were.

Many expected the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to sell, sell, sell with the launch of GTAIV, but instead, both consoles were left on store shelves - moving a nearly identical figure of 188k units each. This, in contrast, is a major hurl downwards compared to March's hardware sales. The PlayStation 2 also barely saw movement, pushing 124.5k consoles out of retailers. The PSP fared better than all, placing third, by selling 193k units.

Once again, it's Nintendo that came out on top, as an explosive 714k Nintendo Wiis were purchased last month, and 415k Nintendo DS Lites. The numbers are no doubt staggering, and we can only wonder what Microsoft's and Sony's moves are next, and how they'll bounce back for May.

Nintendo Wii 714K
Nintendo DS 415K
PSP 193K
PlayStation 3 188K
Xbox 360 188K
PlayStation 2 124.5K

That child's toy is a fad that needs to be put down. Ninty is pulling back the games industry while the other are trying to advance it.
I say this out of love for gaming, Nintendo products are trash.

I understand why the Wii is doing so well. Brawl came out. Mario Kart Wii doesn't look good at all so it must have been Brawl.
May and June should be bigger months for the PS3. You have to remember that GTAIV only came out with two days left in April, maybe people were probably waiting for their rebate checks to come in before buying a console and GTAIV.

I'm pretty sure most people would disagree with you on that (Mario Kart). Anyone I've talked to who's played it absolutely loved it.

Don't get me wrong, I love my PS2, but I love Nintendo games too.

What you have to understand is that the majority of people who play video games just play a game here or there for fun. Most people don't need an amazing console like the PS3 that has state of the art gfx, bluetooth, a built-in router, etc. and that can probably make breakfast for you when you wake up.

Baseball is very right. However... The need to advance is timed... As in, if you where to tell me no one would want to advance eventually, it is a lie. Plus, I myself just got my hands on Wii for the Brawl but to be honest... My Wii is still in it's box, and I never opened up my Brawl case yet, and it's been about a week now... I talked to a lot of my friends at school (Most of them own a Wii) And they said theyve played the Wii for maybe a month or two then threw it to the side... So im thinking about returning mine and saving up for the PS3 MGS4 Bundle. And yes, this does prove that theory about the Wii being bought and tossed to the side true... Wii sparks your body for a short amount of time, then it gets boring...

Dont worry though!!! IM going to try my Wii out first! Who knows, maybe ill like it :)

Wii sucks goat nuts, but it's cheap and a family system. Like I said before... you can't own a Wii by itself. If your a GAMER, then you MUST have something alongside it.

True, but let's not start throwing around comments like Wii sucks goat nut, people might get offended...

The hell am I kidding, It probably does... And I won't hesitate to return it if Brawl dosn't meet my expectations.. Which let me say by the way, are very...very, very damn low.

Brawl is fun, but wasn't worth the wait. My friends and I were waiting patiently for it, and when it got here, it just felt like an enhanced version of Melee - which isn't a bad thing of course - but not worth the wait.

For someone who didn't play countless hours of Melee, Brawl will be a blast.

I can't help but wish Brawl would have been on a true next-gen system.

The level creator is cool, albeit simple.

My friend doesn't even freakin' touch his Wii unless we're over.

i tried to warn my friend not to get a Wii, but he wouldnt listen " But ive got to have Metroid Prime 3 and Twilight Princess, and then later on Brawl" so he did just that

Problem is that just like others, his wii is barely touched now, with the exception of brawl. I told him honestly, its better to own a 360 and ps3 together over a wii 360 or wii ps3 combo

This way, you won't miss out on anything. but thats just my opinion

Actually, The PS3 and X360 pretty much have the same amount of game types.. Therfore your not missing anything with just one of them... To where as the Wii, it's games are more different than the X360 and PS3...

And, yes, ive finally tried my Wii. No, im not pleased. Infact, the first few times my Super Smash Brawl wouldn't even work (talk about Dual-Layer Cd's Wiis should be able to handle them man...)

Waste of my fucking money. Returning it, saving up for MGS4 PS3 Bundle

I think it's entirely plausible that everyone who wanted GTAIV bought their PS3s and Xbox 360s last year, in anticipation for the game's original release date. Additionally, those who anticipated the final release date bought their consoles over the past 2 months, it seems.

my friends all have Wii's and none of them play it, ever, they keep playing GTA4 on my PS3, one of them even sold his Wii and all the games, including Super Mario Galaxy and some others since he became so bored with it, he use to play Brawl a lot as well but even that has become boring and repetitive

if anything it seems it only brings the gaming industry down, it seems very gimicky, but hey thats what the general public loves so thats why it keeps selling, its a real shame in my eyes cause i think its hurting the industry

I'm reading this alot in forums about people tossing their Wii's aside because they're bored with it. You'll have your fanbois defending the Wii by saying they still play it but they will only be playing Brawl and Mario Kart (which are basically the same games as the Cube versions) while they wait forthe next big release if there is one.
The Wii is like all those popular board games that sell millions around the world but families play for only a little while and it gets put away in the store cupboard.
The crazy thing is that my nephew who will be 9 in a couple of months doesn't want a Wii for his birthday as he's played so much on his friends Wii they are both bored themselves, its not as if they by their own games every month. Its like that episode of the Simpsons when that game Boneruncher II or whatever come out and every kid wants it but over time the product become boring and they find the cup and ball more entertaining. That's what happening with the Wii with many gamers and kids.

I don't want to play Mario for over 20 years! Seriously... we need to move on people. Maybe the lack of RPG's? Ignorant moms going for Wii? I hope Sony and Microsoft don't downgrade their products to make it more affordable and suitable for moms to buy for their kids. I thought median age for gaming was 29??? So where's the 18 and up gamers doing? Still playing mario????
