Ninja Theory On Heavenly Sword 2: "Extremely Unlikely"
For a long time, everyone just assumed Ninja Theory would be making a sequel to Heavenly Sword. The original was a great game with quite possibly the best acting we've ever seen, and we had high hopes for that second effort.
Unfortunately, we won't be getting it any time soon, if ever. Ninja Theory has revealed their new project is a multiplatform IP, which certainly means it's not Heavenly Sword 2. According to Ripten, IT Manager "Peonic" explained the situation:
"Weíre not abandoning HS just on a whim because we want to go off and do something different - thereís a great huge raft of reasons behind us taking the direction we are - and itís also the nature of the business that Iím not allowed to share any of those reasons with you. As for the Ďyouíre just not doing HS2 NOWí comments - well one thing you learn in this industry is that you never say ĎNeverí. So Iím not going to say weíll ďneverĒ go back and make HS2 - but itís something I personally see as extremely unlikely."
The first game just recently crossed the platinum sales mark, and while some critics wanted deeper gameplay, it was still considered one of the year's best for the PS3. Many will be disappointed with this decision to abandon the would-be series, but these days, third-party exclusives just aren't in the cards. Here's what Ninja Theory founder Nina Kristensen had to say-
"Well, with Kung-Fu Chaos, we worked exclusively with Microsoft; with Heavenly Sword, we worked exclusively with Sony. And itís really a time for us to go cross-platform, so we ultimately turned it down. As a studio, we feel itís the right thing to do. It makes things more commercially viable - and as an indie we have to be very commercially aware. It was great to work with Sony and get really intimate with the PS3 hardware; going forwards, that positions us to execute things properly on both PS3 and 360."
Now, because Sony owns the publishing rights to HS, they might search for another developer to make the sequel. We really don't want to see that happen, so we'll just cling to the hope that Ninja Theory might eventually decide to step up and deliver Heavenly Sword 2. We get the feeling that this is one of those things that could result in an online petition... But for now, HS2 just ain't happening. Sorry, guys.
