Saints Row 2 Delayed, THQ Needs More Time For Co-Op
Millions of gamers are already hooked on Grand Theft Auto IV, and perhaps some of them were planning to carry over their excitement to another game with a like-minded concept: Saints Row 2. Scheduled for an August release, it would be good timing for those who have spent the last few months trying to get 100% completion in GTAIV.
However, THQ has confirmed that their highly anticipated free-roaming sequel ha slipped from August to October. While they didn't give a reason for this delay, Lazard Capital analyst Colin Sebastian believes he has an explanation. It involves the all-too-important co-op gameplay that THQ is preparing for Saints Row 2:
“We believe the primary motivation for the shift is to enhance and improve the title’s cooperative (co-op) game-play, which is one of the unique features of this game,” said Sebastian. “While improving game quality is important, we also believe that the shift puts more pressure on the title approaching a more crowded holiday market. We also note that online episodic content for GTA IV is due out in 2H08, which could distract from the Saints Row 2 release if they fall within the same time period.” (source: Videogaming247 blog)
Ah, that's a thought. The episodic content for GTAIV will re-invigorate players to step back into Liberty City, and they might rather do that than pay $60 for Saints Row 2. So perhaps the delay is for both technical and timing reasons... But either way, just remember that you shouldn't expect this particular sequel until October. We'll let you know when THQ provides another concrete release date.
