Showdown Preview: Resistance 2 vs. Gears Of War 2
Man, gamers sure are going to be spoiled after 2008 is over. As if two of the greatest games in the past decade aren't enough in one year (Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots), another dastardly duo is set for the fall. Yep, it's the PS3's Resistance 2 vs. the Xbox 360's Gears of War 2.
Now, those of you who don't know us may think we'll immediately give the nod to Resistance 2 just because we're a Sony-centric site. But those who do know us understand we don't play bias and we simply love great games, regardless of what console they're on. I for one adored Gears of War, and I can't wait for the sequel. At the same time, I loved Resistance: Fall of Man and, again, I can't wait for the sequel. Personally, after viewing all the available information right now - which isn't much, admittedly - I have no idea which game has the edge heading into this highly anticipated showdown. Of course, some might say it's unfair to make the comparison in the first place, considering one game is a FPS and the other is a third-person shooter. But hey, we love to compare two potentially fantastic titles, regardless of the genre; look how many comparisons there are already between GTAIV and MGS4. For the record, I will say the original GeoW was a slightly better game than the original Resistance, but that doesn't necessarily mean it gets the automatic advantage for the sequel.
So how about the developers? Well, we've got two immensely talented teams in Insomniac and Epic Games; both have wonderful efforts to their name in the past few years. Graphical quality? Tough to say, especially this early, and we won't risk a compare-and-contrast session between early pieces of artwork and unreliable screenshots. Gameplay? Hell, both are gonna kick-ass, but Gears will have less competition in the third-person shooter genre than Resistance will have in the FPS category. Online multiplayer? Well, with that 60-player extravaganza planned for Resistance 2, it might get the edge there. And how about the big one...popularity? The PS3 has a much bigger installed user base this time around, and neither really has a leg up in terms of name recognition.
So which do you drop your 60 clams for? Oh, that's easy: you drop $130 for both, and go home happy. But if you can't swing that, you're in for a very difficult choice later on this year. Within the next few months, we hope to nail down more info for Resistance 2 and provide you with a great preview; until then, prepare for more unbelievably fantastic titles in 2008.
