Little MGS4 Marketing In US?

During the week of Grand Theft Auto IV's release, the entire world knew it was coming. Now, while Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots won't be quite as gigantic, its launch should at least qualify as "huge." That being the case, wouldn't you expect to see plenty of television ads just like we saw with GTAIV? Well, according to Newsweek's N'Gai Croal, maybe not...  Here's what he had to say on the matter:

Im hearing some reports that the marketing for the game, that there may not in fact be TV marketing for it in the United States. If thats true, thats definitely going to hold it back...

Croal also said the PS3's installed user base - which still isn't extremely high - may also impact the total sales of MGS4, but there's no doubt that fans of the franchise will make the game a success. Granted, GTAIV was available for both the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the TV ads may be non-existent in the U.S., but the gaming world remains a-flame with any news related to Konami's hotly anticipated masterpiece. Croal did compare MGS4 to another stealth type game, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed, which "was marketed phenomenally well" and ended up selling several million copies. As far as we're concerned, though, MGS4 will satisfy a great many gamers with or without a massive marketing campaign, and at the very least, Croal admitted that much:

I think the game is going to be incredibly rewarding for anyone who does decide to play it, but my feeling is that there is a bit of a ceiling on it."

We ain't too worried about MGS4 flopping in terms of sales; it probably won't top GTAIV, but there's little to no chance that MGS4 will tank. Not all games need TV ads, and the PS3 installed user base is growing every day. We figure it's plenty high enough by now, and what PS3 owner isn't aware of this game?

I would say the fanbase hype included with all the talk from gamer to gamer, instore preorder pushers, and title itself will push it. I know a handful of people who have bought PS3s or intend to for this title alone. I've yet to be convinced to get MGS4 (never got into the previous games), but then I gave in and got GTAIV, so anything is possible there. I'm pretty sure it'll do strongly without advertisements. Based on the chatter of games from fellow gamers, my guess is that it will top the sales in the first week for PS3 games...

If you got a PS2 then you know about MGS4 and the PS2 base is unmatched. This game might be the catalyst to pump hardware sales.BUT the U.S economy is hurting now,so that plays a big part.

How are you not going to have a commercial for MGS4? I have been waiting to see them...I wanted the 360 kids to go through the same thing we PS3 owners had to go through with Halo 3.

@aaronisbla - You're right man. I didn't realize that. I just figuered since this generation has changed everything we knew to be true, that MGS4 would have a huge ad campaign behind it.

Oh well.

There wasn't much of a TV ad campaign for GTAIV here in the UK either. And the only ad i saw for it was a 360 ad.
TV advertising is not always the best way to sell certain products. So maybe the guys incharge of marketing this game did some deep research on the most cost effective way to market it.

All the gaming magazines are loaded with MGS4 ads and previews. I think that is where most gamers get alot of info on new games.

Also you can't log onto any game website without seeing ads for MGS4.

It should sell well enough to make a good buck.

Metal Gear Solid 4? Is it really coming out? *sight*

In Mexico we don't have any TV ads for videogames unless it's from Microsoft.

But we are aware of this title and ready to pick it up

@pavlovic - I have a question for you, if you don't mind (hope you see this). When you buy games in Mexico, do they come with packaging in Spanish? And subtitles in the game? Or at least Spanish in-game menus?

Or do you just receive the same copies as the US?

Always wondered.

@Fabi, for the PS3 we receive the same games that you do in the USA, some games (like RFOM, HS, Uncharted, FIFA, every ubisoft title, etc.) have a spanish soundtracks or subtitles and you can change the audio or set up the subtitles within the PS3 system menu (have to put the ps3 in spanish).

For the 360 sometimes we get the same versions than the US and sometimes there are specail editions made for latin america (Like Halo 3, the version we got is only available in spanish and the voice acting is terrible)

I really don't mind playing in English, actually it's a great way to practice it.

Thanks, I always wondered. How about RPGs? Ever get one in Spanish? I can imagine how Halo 3 sounded in Spanish, hehe.

RPG? I don't play RPG often, but as far as I know they're only available in English and some of them with spanish subtitles.
