Install Times For MGS4 Discovered

Yesterday, we confirmed the tech specs for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots but there's a bit more to talk about: those multiple install times.

Even if you're a stickler for avoiding even the tiniest details before playing, we won't be including any spoilers here. We wanted to clear that up because as Wal-Mart has already broken the street date on this one, there's a good chance you'll find plenty of spoilers online. Anyway, thanks to a NeoGAF poster, it seems we now have the individual install times for MGS4: first, there's the 8-minute 4.6 gig install before you start to play, which we already knew. After this, the game installs more data before the start of each of the five Acts-

  • Act 2 - 3 mins
  • Act 3 - 3 mins
  • Act 4 - 2 mins
  • Act 5 - 1 min

Now, obviously, this doesn't include the cut-scene time included in MGS4, but those aren't considered "downtime." Those are part of the story and something you certainly won't want to miss; these install times leave you sitting there with nothing to do, but thankfully, they're short. No big deal, right?

Doesn't sound too bad. I need to avoid web contact for the next month or so. I really don't want anything getting spoiled.

This is a new era for console gaming. I'm used to loads/install times from PC gaming. With mammoths like MGS4 its almost expected.

You're right, it's definitely no big deal.
Does anyone really care about the load time for GTAIV everytime it starts? Nope. Not a single complaint.
When it's something as good as this, pretty much everyone is willing to put up with a little load and install time.

Well, no, nobody's complaining about the initial GTAIV load time, but then again, GTAIV never loads again unless you select a mission. And that's only 7-10 seconds or so.

Of course, MGS4 is faaaaar more cinema-heavy, which is why this needs to be done. I'm not complaining, either, but I do think a few people might be annoyed at the Act interruptions for installation. It's kinda new.

I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering how come we can't just fully install the game at the begginning? It worked for DMC4. The intial download for DMC4 was very long but had no complaint, cause every load screen loaded quick, and no more installations.

This will still be a kick ass game.

A game at all is better than a 10gb game that finishes in a day.

This is a definate game of the year candidate, if your complaining about a few minutes of load time then your missing out on the point that this game delivers all expectations and more. Especially mgo, your getting 2 badass games. Its a no brainer. Buy it!

If there is an 8 min install at the beginning at 4.6 gig and 9 minutes of install during the game does that mean by the end of the game there is around 9.2 gig install?? ..not that it would stop me from getting the game.

the initial, mandatory install is OK IMO, but the install between "act" is just plain stupid.
it will be better if everything is ONE time install on first time. so then we just Enjoy the game.

now what if you only have 5GB free space, you do the mandatory 4.6GB install, but at the end of act1, MGS4 say, NOT ENOUGH FREE SPACE to continue to ACT2,
please delete some data.

and you need to go back to XMB , delete some data.

install ACT2, and after that much hassle, then you will able to play act2...............

by that time you will "loss" your "adrenaline" and "mood" -__-

I just got the game (1 day early thanks to Play.com).
The opening install shows Snake smoking and game relating warnings. Not too boring an install.
