Wal-Mart $100 Blu-Ray Gift Card Drives PlayStation 3 Sales
Sometimes, all the consumer needs is a little added incentive to take a relatively expensive plunge.
According to an article by Home Media Magazine, Wal-Mart's $100 gift card for any Blu-Ray player is causing a significant increase in PlayStation 3 sales. We refuse to clarify that the PS3 has a Blu-Ray player in it because we just can't believe any of our readers wouldn't already know that. Anywho, if you're looking to take advantage of this offer, it ends today (promotion ran from June 8 through Jun 14), so you had best get a move on, and the popular choice is the PS3. Many retailers and analysts say consumers believe the PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player out there for the simple reason that it can be updated for the upcoming Profile 2.0 interactive features. Most competitors, like Magnavox, don't offer this capability.
Furthermore, according to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, most consumers are more interested in the PS3 simply because Blu-Ray hasn't replaced DVD as the main movie-viewing medium. Thing is, the PS3 can - shock! - be used for gaming as well. As Pachter told Home Media, "People will want BD more when there is more content, but they want consoles now." So anyway, we await official numbers but for now, that $100 gift card promotion seems to have helped Sony a great deal.
