Sony Tops "Most Innovative" Survey

Everyone believes the Wii and DS are so successful for Nintendo because they're original and innovative. At the same time, a recent survey of consumers has shown they believe Sony to be the most innovative in the market (perhaps for other reasons besides the PS3 and PSP; reasons like Blu-Ray, we imagine).

According to BrandRepublic, the branding consultancy firm Incite issued a survey to 500 different consumers between the ages of 18 and 65, and also conducted three focus groups with "pre-family, family and post-family demographic groups." The survey was simple: participants were asked which brands they consider to be the "most and least innovative," and then explain the reasons behind their selections. Incite plans to run this survey every year, and their inaugural results are interesting: 74% of consumers respect brands that are "constantly moving forward," and 85% said they want new products to "make their life easier." At the same time, 60% are not too keen on the idea of making something new just for the hell of it.

Here's the final list of the top 20 most innovative brands according to the survey results:

  • 1. Sony
  • 2. Apple
  • 3. Microsoft
  • 4. Virgin
  • 5. Nokia
  • 6. Dyson
  • 7. Nintendo
  • 8. Tesco
  • 9. Sky
  • 10. Panasonic
  • 11. Honda
  • 12. Samsung
  • 13. Google
  • 14. Phillips
  • 15. Dell
  • 16. Toyota
  • 17. eBay
  • 18. Amazon
  • 19. BT
  • 20. Toshiba

Yep, Sony tops the list, two spots ahead of Microsoft and six ahead of Nintendo. Of course, there are other factors coming into play besides video games in this survey, but even so, it places Sony in a positive light. Innovation is what continues to drive industry - regardless of what that industry is - so it's always good to have consumers believe you are a company that keeps trying to bring something new to the market.

Sony has a ton of high quality technologies. Cameras, Camcorders, Game Systems, games, TV's, Home Entertainment Products, Blu-Ray, etc. Then they also have television, movie, and music studios. So of every company on this list Sony has the most places where it is possible to inovate, and they do a really good job at it.

Please can someone explain why Tesco came in at number 8 for most innonative over brands like Panasonic? Tesco sell food and other junk, there isn't anything they do that is all innovative, or even their's. Philips at 14? Don't people realize what they do?
Dyson design a hoover that looks different many years ago and they're at number 6 for that. Why is Sky even in the list? All very baffling.
