MGS4 Is Best-Selling PS3 Title In Japan
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for the PS2 may still hold the crown as the best-selling stealth-based video game in history, but the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PS3 may be staging a coup. MGS4 wants that crown, and a lot of consumers must think Kojima's latest masterpiece deserves it.
According to Famitsu.com, Enterbrain has released sales numbers for Japan for a 4-day span between June 12 and June 15 (obviously to encompass the MGS4 launch). Early reports stated that Konami's blockbuster had sold around 300,000 copies in the first day, and these final stats may prove those reports: Enterbrain says 476,334 total copies of MGS4 were sold in that 4-day span. The number includes both the regular and special editions of the game plus the premium PS3 packages and welcome box bundles. This makes it the fastest and best-selling PS3 title in Japan and if you were wondering, yes, it also tops previous MGS launches in the region. MGS4 just managed to beat out MGS2 by a little over 30,000 units:
- MGS1 - 316,833
- MGS2 - 456,747
- MGS3 - 487,156
Now all we need are the US numbers, and we can see just how well MGS4 did during its launch. At this rate, it does seem almost inevitable that MGS4 will top MGS2 at some point in terms of total sales, but you never know... When we get some official results for North America, we'll post 'em up.
