MGS4 Generated "Minimal Spike" In PS3 UK Sales
We believe there were plenty of gamers out there waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to launch before purchasing a PlayStation 3, but it seems the blockbuster exclusive's release hasn't had a significant impact on PS3 sales in the UK.
The game shot to #1 on the software charts in the region, but according to Chart-Track, it has prompted only a "minimal spike" of 7% on the hardware sales charts for the PS3. It has been nearly one week since the release of the game, and despite coming up only 14,000 short of the opening weekend figure posted by the PS2's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, MGS4 doesn't appear to be the system-seller Sony hoped it'd be. Well, at least as far as the UK is concerned, but then again, we have to remember that the PS3 enjoyed by far the best launch last year in the UK. The Japan and US launches, by direct comparison, weren't anywhere near as good. So perhaps not as many gamers needed the PS3 for MGS4.
Thing is, you can't play the game without a PS3, and MGS4 sits at the top of the software sales charts...the translation here should be relatively obvious, even though we still would've thought this particular game could've shifted more hardware units.

As stated many times before, no doubt the developers have to pull up their socks and deliver the next generation dream. We have seen glimpses of what can be done, but it is a long painful process, and "cross-platform" developers really struggle to get the best out of the target platforms due to the complexities and costs involved...

1] Sony has competition (not so easy as it was before)
2] Gamers and console fans just do not have dolls of cash to fund everything they desire, they have to choose. There may be alot of people who really want a PS3 and MGS4, but simply can't afford it
3] A deteriorating economy does not help matters either
4] Games and console are still to expensive (this will change on the hardware front this year I suspect)
5] PS3 still needs time to mature, but it will get there
6] Lots of other good games to look forward too with plenty of distraction about
