In-Game XMB And Trophies Coming With Today's Maintenance?

Last week, it was finally confirmed beyond all shadow of a doubt that the long-awaited in-game XMB and trophy support would arrive for the PlayStation 3 with firmware update 2.40. At the time, Sony didn't say when it would arrive, though; they simply said we could expect it to arrive "soon."

Well, perhaps "soon" means now. If you check the official PlayStation forums, you will see that the PlayStation Network and Store will be down today between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The message is quite clear in saying that nobody will be able to get on the Store or play any games online, and the 6-hour maintenance time is going to be used for...well, something. They don't just bring everything down for laughs, but then again, this doesn't necessarily imply that firmware update 2.40 is coming along with it. We're probably jumping the gun, but we'd just like to know what's going on during this "scheduled maintenance." With this rumor floating around now, we do expect Sony to fill us in at some point.

Maybe everyone is just too anxious to get that in-game XMB and trophy support, so any mention of changes or updates to the Network is immediately scrutinized and speculated upon. But hey, can't blame people for hoping.

I know u guys at psx are just doin yo job, but I hate to keep getting my hopes up to get let down. Although I'm curious myself.

and is the trophies gonna include things you have already done in games or is it gonna start from as soon we get it (hopefully today)

That'll probably be up to developers. If they want to go back to old projects and put in trophy support they probably can. I don't think we'll see a lot of developers do it though. I also can't help but think that you would need to go back and do it again. I doubt that it would be able to read your save data and unlock your trophies, for most games at least.

it'll depend on what's needed.

a game like Burnout already tracks plenty of data and can implement trophies from the savedata. but some other games just don't track enough data to give other than a "reached xx level" and "completed yy%"

yea, I say people are just really grabbing at nothing. MMOs have maintenance weekly. I'd say all servers have to have some maintenance ever now and then. I doesn't mean anything they wouldn't give us a patch to prove stability and then release the in-game XMB, a WEEK later. they would have done both at the same time. sorry guys but I believe we have a 6 week wait still ahead.

I think that they might be laying down some groundwork on the system for trophies, but I believe the actual update is still a little ways ahead. They wouldn't have released 2.36 if 2.4 was so close to being done, they'd have just combined the two. That being said, it is unheard of for Sony to announce these kind of specifics so far in advance. I can't believe that the update is more than a couple weeks away.

Its coming..it has too!!i mean look at the outcry of almost every gamer that wants it!! But i just want to know one thing and im betting ill be right!!! Europe will have it a week later then everywhere else?? Am i right or am i right?

I dont think we'll see the XMB and trophies today but they are probably doing the maintance to prepare for firmware 2.40, expect to see it very soon.

since 360 version of gta 4 has achievements, does that mean that they can make the same ones for PS3 as well?

Good thing I checked here before callin sony, when I tried to sign on it says my "use of the psn has been suspended," I thought they believe I was stealin from them or something!

I bet they are just preparing for 2.40, but I will be signing back in at 2:01 pm to check if 2.40 is available or not. Kick ass if it is, but betting it won't.

i dunno, It may never come out, just like home will never come out.

Sony and the Ps3= 80% delays...except for MGS4 :D

Hopefully sony can get their game on with MGS4s sucess
